Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. xi, [i], 356 pages + a 32 pages publisher's catalogue at the rear. In the original cloth binding, spine wrinkled and creased. Some wear. No free end papers, probably pasted onto the pastedowns? Bookplate of Henry Alicis Beeforth and his pencil ownership inscription to the title page. Pages xi/[xii] are detached and chipped at the edges. Light browning some soiling to pages throughout, a bit dusty. Staining to pages 92/93. Tear from the fore edge, just into the text on pages 89/90. Occasional pencil lines to margins. Page 215 torn with the loss of the final word on the page.

No Jacket. 1st Edition. 396 pages with no markings or inscriptions , pages are toned with age and a little browned with the occasional thumb mark and stain but are clear and bright. Presentation label on inside front cover dated 1863, end covers a little stained. 8 additional publishers adverts to the rear, page 8 has a small tear. Original brown boards with gilt title on spine, boards rubbed and have a few small white marks , corners are bumped and the spine edges also have a few small rips but remain intact and firm. Binding is firm with no loose pages. A rare copy. Usual toning and shelf ware should be expected.

Original navy blue cloth covered boards , bevelled edges. spines have title in gold lettering . Boards are in good condition with apart from some slight shelf wear. Volume one has some foxing , fore edges are spotted , front free half title and full title page have slight bend on right hand head corner. Volume 11 has only a few pages with foxing , the fore edges are also spotted. Generally both volumes are good and tight. Two very interesting volumes if you went to Oxford you might find the1886 memories very interesting for comparison , and even if you didn't they are still an amazing read.

James Pycroft (1813-95) was a pioneer of cricket research and in the opinion of Ashley-Cooper his efforts in this direction surpassed those of earlier commentators like Boxall, Lambert and Nyren. This classic book on cricket technique, the first of its kind, is one of the game's great literary masterpieces, covering many key aspects of the game including its origins, the rise of the Hambledon club, I Zingari, Surrey CCC, the impact of gambling, together with tutorials on batting, bowling and fielding. The first edition was published in 1851 and there were eight further editions up to 1887. Seventh edition revised. 12mo. vi+370pp. Original green boards, lightly rubbed. Some intermittent foxing inside, mainly to early pages. Good condition.

James Pycroft (1813-1895) was born at Geyers House, in Wiltshire, and died at Brighton aged 82. The Cricket Field was his major work, and remains one of cricket's key early books. His approach, also favoured by many other authors of the day, was to mythologise cricket as a noble, manly and essentially British pastime, favourably comparing the virtues of Victorian cricket with the disgraceful state of play at the turn of the century, when betting on the outcome of matches was widespread. "If there should happen by any chance to be a cricketer who has never heard of a book called The Cricket-Field, written by Mr Pycroft, he is strongly advised to buy it at once ." suggested FS Ashley-Cooper ". for it is the book on which nearly all others, in the historical part at least, may be said to be founded ."
