Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Color frontispiece "Elves" by Arthur Rackham / Harrison Cady, Norman Rockwell, etc. (illustrator). 1st Edition. Two hardcover volumes stamped in original black-and-gilt over red cloth bindings, good-plus. The 5-page Hawaiian photo essay here reprints the legendary first book on surfing, Gurrey's handmade book of photographs (with supplementary text) "The Surf Riders of Hawaii," copies printed 1910-1914. Dubbed the "grandfather of surf photography," Gurrey was the first to get out in a canoe to obtain better shots of the Waikiki surfers in action, and his photographs in said book were the first to capture Duke Kahanamoku on his board. Of the two slightly different versions of the book, only eight copies are known to survive, and when one surfaces they can ask $40,000. The August, 1915 issue of the magazine, published shortly after the book itself (and included here), is an affordable way to own this landmark photo-documentation of the early surf scene at Waikiki, and reportedly even includes an additional photo not found in the book. These two hardbound volumes (gilt titling and devices remain strong, original floral endpapers) also offer Frances Hodgson Burnett's complete serial "The Lost Prince," Thornton Burgess' complete "Tommy and the Wishing-Stone" (yes, illustrated by Harrison Cady), Augusta Huiell Seaman's complete serial "The Boarded-Up House," American League umpire Billy Evans asking Christy Mathewson and Cy Young their advice to young pitchers, etc. Pages numbered sequentially 1 through 1152. These two volumes will weigh more than 7 lbs., boxed, and may cost extra to ship "Priority" or outside the U.S. The pair now reduced from $250.
