New York: Penguin:, 2024. First printing, Trade paperback, New, 628 pp. Cover artwork by: Jason Ramirez "Taryn Cornick believes that the past--her sister's violent death, and her own ill-conceived revenge - is behind her, and she can get on with her life. She has written a successful book about the things that threaten libraries…: insects, damp, light, fire, carelessness and uncaring . . . but not all of the attention it brings her is good. A policeman, Jacob Berger, questions her about a cold case. Then there are questions about a fire in the library at her grandparents' house and an ancient scroll box known as the Firestarter, as well as threatening phone calls and a mysterious illness. Finally a shadowy young man named Shift appears, forcing Taryn and Jacob toward a reckoning felt in more than one world." First printing, Trade paperback, New. Jason Ramirez (illustrator).

Fine unread condition black boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Author's Note; Prologue: Zeldina and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with a section of both black-and-white and col…or photographic plates and preliminary page map. "In Good Morning, Mr. Mandela, Zelda La Grange recounts her remarkable life at the right hand of the man we both knew and loved. It's a tribute to both of them - to Madiba's eye for talent and his capacity for trust, and to Zelda's courage to take on a great challenge and her capacity for growth. This story proves the power of making politics personal and is an important reminder of the lessons Madiba taught us all." - President Bill Clinton. "President Nelson Mandela's choice of the young Afrikaner typist Zelda La Grange as his most trusted aide embodied his commitment to reconciliation in South Africa. She repaid his trust with loyalty and integrity. I have the highest regard for her." - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. "A white Afrikaner, Zelda la Grange grew up in segregated South Africa, supporting the regime and the rules of apartheid. Her conservative family referred to the imprisioned Nelson Mandela as "a terrorist." Yet just a few years after his release and the end of apartheid, she would be traveling the world by Nelson Mandela's side, having grown to respect and cherish the man she would come to call "Khulu" - "Grandfather." Good Morning, Mr. Mandela tells the extraordinary story of how a young woman's life, ideas, and prejudices - everything she once believed - were utterly transformed by the man she had been taught was the enemy. It is the incredible journey of an awkward, terrified young secretary in her twenties who rose from a job in a government typing pool to become one of President Mandela's most loyal and devoted associates. During his presidency she was one of his three private secretaries and then became an aide-de-camp and spokesperson and managed his office in his retirement. Working and traveling by his side for almost two decades, La Grange found herself negotiating with celebrities and world leaders, all in the cause of supporting and caring for Nelson Mandela in his many roles. Here La Grange pays tribute to Mr. Mandela as she knew him - a teacher who gave her the most valuable lessons of her life. The Nelson Mandela we meet in these pages is a man who refused to be defined by his past, who forgave and respected all, but who was also frank, teasing, and direct. As he renewed his country, he also freed La Grange from a closed world of fear and mistrust, giving her life true meaning. "I was fearful of so much twenty years ago - of life, of black people, of this black man and the future of South Africa - and I now was no longer persuaded or influenced by mainstream fears. He not only liberated the black man but the white man too." This is a book about love and second chances and honors the lasting and inspiring gifts of one of the great men of our time. It offers a rare intimate portrait of Nelson Mandela and his remarkable life as well as moving proof of the power we all have to change." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Ramirez, Jason (jacket design); Van Huyssteen, Alet (jacket photograph); La Grange, ANton (author photograph) (illustrator).

As new condition olive green boards, textured white spine, and silver spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Andrew Roberts; Author Dedication; Introduction: The… Leadership Conundrum; Acknowledgments and Notes. "Roberts is a masterly storyteller. Elagantly balances fact, thought, and fresh, clear prose. Roberts has set a high bar for future historians." - The Wall Street Journal. "Roberts tells this story with great authority and not a little panache. He writes elegantly, with enjoyable flashes of tartness, and is in complete command both of his sources and the vast historiography." - The New York Times. "A magnificent book; it manages to be distinctive but not eccentric, comprehensive in scope but not cramped by detail, giving due weight both to the extraordinary personalities and to the blind economic and physical forces involved." - The Economist. "Brilliant, breathtaking, unputdownable." - London Evening Standard. "A comparison of nine leaders who led their nations through the greatest wars the world has ever seen and whose unique strengths - and weaknesses - shaped the course of human history, from the bestselling, award-winning author of Churchill and Napoleon. Taking us from the French Revolution to the Cold War, Andrew Roberts presents a bracingly honest and deeply insightful look at nine major figures in modern history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C. Marshall, Charles De Gaulle, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Margaret Thatcher. Each of these leaders fundamentally shaped the outcome of the war in which their nation was embroiled. Is war leadership unique, or did these leaders have things in common, traits and techniques that transcend time and place and can be applied to the essential nature of conflict? Meticulously researched and compellingly written, Leadership in War presents readers with fresh, complex portraits of leaders who approached war with different tactics and weapons, but with the common goal of success in the face of battle. Both inspiring and cautionary, these portraits offer important lessons on leadership in times of struggle, unease, and discord. With his trademark verve and incisive observation, Roberts reveals the qualities that doom even the most promising leaders to failure, as well as the traits that lead to victory." - from the inner front jacket flap. Cavanaugh, Meighan (book design); Ramirez, Jason (jacket design); Kunst, Anna (author photograph) (illustrator).

As new condition forest green boards, black spine, and gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Nathaniel Philbrick; Author Dedication; Preface: The Land and…the Sea; Epilogue: Aftermath; Acknowledgments; Notes; Bibliogrpahy; Illustrations Credits and Index. Illustrated with two section of black-and-white photographic plates and map illustrated front and rear endpapers. A small remainder dot at the lower page edge. "The American Revolution may have been started by a group of citizen-soldiers on a green in Lexington, Massachusetts, but it was won on a choppy patch of water off Chesapeake Bay. In Bunker Hill and Valiant Ambition, Nathaniel Philbrick gave us a new and provocative way of looking at the war that created the United States. His latest book is the capstone of that enterprise, focusing on the last year of the war, and is the culmination of Philbrick's engagement with American history and the sea over the last twenty years. In the fall of 1780, after five frustrating years of war, George Washington had come to realize that the only way to defeat the British Empire was with the help of the French navy. But as he had learned after two years of trying, coordinating his army's movements with those of a fleet of warships based thousands of miles away was next to impossible. And then, on September 5, 1781, the impossible happened. Recognized today as one of the most important naval engagements in the history of the world, the Battle of the Chesapeacke - fought without a single American ship - made the subsequent victory of the Americans at Yorktown a virtual inevitability. In a narrative that moves from Washington's headquarters on the Hudson River, to the wooded hillside in North Carolina where Nathanael Greene fought Lord Cornwallis to a vicious draw, to Lafayette's brilliant series of maneuvers across Tidewater Virginia, Philbrick details the epic and suspenseful years through to its triumphant conclusion. A riveting and wide-ranging story, full of dramatic, unexpected turns, In the Hurricane's Eye reveals that the fate of the American Revolution depended, in the end, on Washington and the sea." - from the inner front jacket flap. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - We feel that to 'better' American poetry is to jam dominant systems of taste to the best of our abilities, and to resignify the very phrase 'American poetry' with the languages that it so desperately lacks. We intend to center voices of resistance, subjectivities that emerge from the radical…margins, artists whose Americanness transcends nationalism and other borders, perspectives historically denied institutional backing--in short, poets and poetries that are urgent and necessary but do not get along nicely with Power.

Includes List of Other Books by Alan Taylor; Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quotes; List of Illustrations and… Maps; Epilogue; Acknowledgments; Notes; Bibliography and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps. "From a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian comes a brilliant, absorbing study of Thomas Jefferson's campaign to save Virginia through education. By turns entertaining and tragic, this beautifully written history reveals the origins of a great university in the dilemmas of Virginia slavery. It offers an incisive portrait of Thomas Jefferson set against a social fabric of planters in decline, enslaved black families torn apart by sales, and a hair-trigger code of male honor. A man of "deft evasions" who was both courtly and withdrawn, Jefferson sought control of his family and state from his lofty perch at Monticello. Never quite the egalitarian we wish him to be, he advocated emancipation but shrank from implementing it, entrusting that reform to the next generation. Devoted to the education of his granddaughters, he nevertheless accepted their subordination in a masculine culture. During the revolution, he proposed to educate all white children in Virginia, but later in life he narrowed his goal to building an elite university. In 1819 Jefferson's intensive drive for state support of a new university succeeded. His intention was a university to educate the sons of Virginia's wealthy planters, lawyers, and merchants, who might then democratize the state and in time rid it of slavery. But the university's students, having absorbed the traditional vices of the Virginia gentry, preferred to practice and defend them. Opening in 1825, the university nearly collapsed as unruly students abused one another, the enslaved servants, and the faculty. Jefferson's hopes of developing an enlightened leadership for the state were disappointed, and Virginia hardened its commitment to slavery in the coming years. The university was born with the flaws of a slave society. Instead, it was Jefferson's beloved granddaughters who carried forward his faith in education by becoming dedicated teachers of a new generation of women." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. "With characteristic eloquence, Alan Taylor chronicles the unlikely emergence of one of the most important experiments in American education: the University of Virgina. Caught between the promise of a new nation of freedom and the reality of a declining slave society, Thomas Jefferson and his allies forged an institution at once intellectually innovative and socially conservative. Taylor's rich, evocative book captures the surprising drama of that invention." = Edward L. Ayers, author of The Thin Light of Freedom.
