This is the revised and enlarged second edition of S.C. Ray's definitive history of the Kashmir Valley, covering the period from the earliest times up to the Muslim conquest in 1338 A.D. Based on the author's doctoral dissertation, the text remains one of the most thorough investigations into the region's pre-Islamic civilization. Ray meticulously reconstructs the political history using the Rajatarangini of Kalhana as a primary framework, cross-referenced with Chinese travelogues (Hiuen Tsang, Ou-K'ong) and archaeological data. The scarce first edition of this scholarly work on the political evolution of Kashmir and the attendant cultural, religious and social developments of the Kashmiri people culled mainly from archaeological and literary sources. A second edition was issued in 1970. Cloth is faintly foxed, some dust-soiling and foxing to top edge; the unclipped dust jacket well-preserved condition except for a small chunk missing along the top edge of the front panel.
