In-quarto broché, à toutes marges relié par une cordelette en état de parution (cf le sommaire dans le scan) 28 pages Oeuvre capitale de Gergonne (1771-1859), professeur d'astronomie à la Faculté de Montpellier, les Annales furent fondée à Nîmes en collaboration avec J.E. Thomas-Lavernède ; cette initiative est alors unique, puisqu'elle constitue le premier journal de mathématiques pures, qui deviendra à partir de 1836, sous la direction de Joseph Liouville, le Journal de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées. Le dernier volume des Annales (22) est resté inachevé. "Gergonne's Annales played an essential role in the creation of modern projective and algebraic geometry". Elles renferment plusieurs grands noms des mathématiques contemporaines : Ampère, Poisson, Poncelet, Cauchy, Chasles, Servois, Dupin, Lamé, etc. Evasriste Galois y publie son premier article, la "Démonstration d'un théorème sur les fractions continues périodiques" (t. XIX), qui s'inscrit dans la recherche des solutions d'une équation polynomiale. D'autre part, les Annales se singularisent par la participation de mathématiciens de tous niveaux, y compris des élèves de Gergonne, qui étaient amenés à y prendre part en résolvant quelques problèmes complexes pour lesquels le maître établissait une sorte de concours. "Il serait impossible (.) d'énumérer et d'analyser les mémoires ou articles que Gergonne à consignés dans ses Annales ; il nous suffira de rappeler qu'ils se rapportent de préférence à cette géométrie supérieure, d'origine Newtonienne, et qui, entre les travaux de Monge et ceux de M. Chasles, n'eut pas de vulgarisateur plus habile et infatigable que le professeur de Montpellier. L'algèbre, la théorie des nombres, l'astronomie, la mécanique, et enfin la philosophie mathématique ont également fourni à Gergonne le sujet de nombreux mémoires. Parmi ces travaux si variés, les savants spéciaux ont surtout remarqué ceux qui ont pour objet diverses questions de dioptrique, les miroirs sphériques, les surfaces caustiques, la théorie des polaires, le problème des contacts des cercles sur un plan des sphères dans l'espace et des cercles sur la sphère, solution neuve et élégante de questions qui avaient déjà occupé Viète, Descartes et Newton" (Bouisson). Gergonne lui-même est l'auteur de nombreux articles, certains publiés sans nom d'auteur ou bien sous pseudonymes ; il lui arrivait de s'adresser à lui-même des objections sous forme de lettres écrites par de prétendus contradicteurs.
