Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Lincoln at New Salem' offers a detailed and intimate exploration of the formative years Abraham Lincoln spent in the frontier village of New Salem, Illinois. During this pivotal period from 1831 to 1837, the future president evolved from a humble flatboatman into a respected legislator and s…tudent of law. Thomas P. Reep captures the essence of the community that shaped Lincoln's character, providing an in-depth look at the neighbors, friends, and early political struggles that defined his path. The work delves into the daily realities of pioneer life, illustrating how the intellectual and social environment of New Salem contributed to Lincoln's unique worldview. This historical account serves as an essential resource for those seeking to understand the roots of Lincoln's greatness and the rustic Illinois landscape that fostered his rise to national prominence. In den WarenkorbTall 8vo. 147, [1] pp. Numerous plates, maps, 1 large folding pictorial map of New Salem. Pebbled brown publisher's cloth, gilt lettering on front cover (minor scuffing, soiling & spotting front cover), still VG- copy. First edition of this work recreating and tracing the life of Abraham Lincoln in the community of New Salem, IL… where he lived from 1831-1837. While residing in the town, he worked as a river boatman, fought in the Black Hawk War, a short-lived stint as a general store owner, as well as postmaster, surveyor, rail splitter, and was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly. The village was mostly abandoned in 1840, but in 1906, Hearst purchased the Village Land, and contributed to the construction of the Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site -- most of which were later constructed by the CCC during the Great Depression.
