He has been Astronomer Royal since 1995, and served as President of the Royal Society from 2005 to 2010. The author of over 500 research papers, Rees has won numerous awards for physics and astronomy. He has spent most of his academic career at the University of Cambridge, where he served as Master of Trinity College from 2004 to 2012.
