This rare1899 apparent first edition is in very good condition with an illustration of an English Mastiff holding a spaniel on the front cover--title in gold on the cover and spine.Though there is some age discoloration, the book (6"x8 1/4") is tight and bright and unmarked.Featuring the Mastiff, a King Charles Spaniel and a Maltese, the story is illustrated throughout with charming black and white drawings by W W LLoyd. There are several pages of period ads in the back.

Both letters are on bifoliums, and both on aged paper, with damp and rust staining. ONE: 7 October 1887. 2pp., 12mo. Blackwoods the publishers have forwarded to him Langbridge's 'letter asking for permission to quote three passages from George Eliot's works in a book of "Readings" which you are preparing', and he has 'great pleasure in according you the desired permission'. TWO: 12 March 1888. 3pp., 12mo. With mourning border. He is 'very glad' to have Langbridge's 'full and thoroughly satisfactory explanation'. He is completing the form which Blackwoods have forwarded to him, and suggests that Langbridge's 'printed letter should make it clear that you are asking the publishers in case they should be joint proprietors of the copyright. This would prevent any similar misconception to that which has arisen in this case.' The work referred to is presumably Langbridge's 'What to Read at Winter Entertainments', published in four parts, 1888-1890.
