Pages are lightly tanned throughout. Thumb-marking present to some pages, text remains unaffected. Pencil inscription to front pastedown. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Splits to spine ends causing cloth to be frayed. Staining to rear board.

These anecdotes were chosen from a larger volume, published in 1849, with "omitted stories.either grotesque, or they had no marks of authenticity about them. (from the introduction by Rev. Cheever). Hundreds of anecdotes covering such subjects as the Bible, prayer, consciousness, something called "Christian firmness", Providence, missions, etc. An exceptionally nice copy of a scarce book.

Issued in paper wraps in 1846, an era from which few softcover books have survived. Contains two works in one, the first being by Cheever and the second by Lewis. The Lewis essay is from a public debate held in Boston in 1843, and is in reply to J.L. O'Sullivan.

Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A large and illustrated copy of John Bunyan's famous Christian allegory. The Pilgrim's Progress was first published in 1678 and is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. This text comprises of The Pilgrim's Progress and other works by Bunyan. It includes the prefaces and indices as well as an original memoir of the author by George B Cheever. Illustrated, with 31 plates. The plate 'Bunyan's Dream' unfortunately has suffered severe loss. Otherwise, the text is complete. John Bunyan was an English writer and Baptist. In total he wrote nearly sixty titles, most of which were expanded sermons. In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Externally, smart with slight rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Small patches of rubbing to the spine, particularly at the head and tail of spine. Rubbing is heavier to the rear board where there are also several marks. Hinges are slightly strained but firm. Gift inscription to recto of front endpaper, Presented to Mr John Watson on his Marriage Day with Best Wishes Peter Coldwell, December 27th 1871. The inscription has a few light felt pen scribbles from another prior owner. Tide mark to bottom of frontispiece due to damp staining. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with instances of spotting throughout, heavier to the plates and to the first and last few pages. Spotting throughout text is mainly to the margins not drastically affecting text. The plate 'Bunyan's Dream' is torn, and lacking a significant portion. Good. book.
