Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Thomas Derrick (illustrator). A smart scarce edition of this adorned manuscript from the Reverend Arthur Tooth. Scarce work. Thirty-eight pages of adorned manuscript, full of illustrations, following the religious teaching of the Church of England in the story of the Plamerman. With a facsimile letter from the artist, Thomas Derrick, gifting a copy of the work to a Miss Corbett. Written by Arthur Tooth, an English ritualistic priest of the Church of England and a member of the Society of the Holy Cross who was prosecuted in 1876 under the Public Worship Regulation Act 1874 for using proscribed liturgical practices. Designed and illustrated by Thomas Derrick, an English artist who designed murals and stained glass, but is best known for his work as an illustrator and cartoonist. In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and bumping to the extremities. The odd mark to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Pencil inscription to the front endpaper. Very Good. book.

Derrick, and done into Manuscript by Bertha Bell. The Rev. Tooth (1839-1931) was best known for being prosecuted and imprisoned for his liturgical worship practices, and consequently became a martyr figure for Anglo-Catholics. He established a convent, chapel and orphanage in Croydon in 1878, from which he published this book - a beautiful book of old English prose/poetry illustrated with attractive woodcut illustrations and borders. Published at The Convent, Woodside, Croydon. Undated, but c. 1920. Privately printed. A fine copy in modern binding with marbled stone effect papers over boards with black and gilt label to spine. All soundly bound. Text is in fine condition and printed on a high quality laid paper stock. We were delighted to make its acquaintance of this uncommon publication, fo which we were previously unaware. Text in English. Title + 77pp. All pages printed on one side only. Approximately 285mm high x 230mm wide x 20mm deep. Weight approximately 788g (unpacked). More photos on request.
