Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Some edgewear and a few closed tears, otherwise quite good - the music is clean and legible. Pianoforte score with lyrics. VERY HARD TO FIND in any condition. The sheet music is subtitled "A friend in life, or a lifelong companion," and its theme centers on a man who laments: "I am forty years old, and still a bachelor. What good is money if I am alone? I seek a loving companion, a good wife for life."It is a poignant Yiddish song about the longing for companionship, very much in the emotional tradition of the immigrant Jewish experience on the Lower East Side. The piece was an operetta titled A khaver in leyben, written in 1918, with a libretto by Shloime Steinberg and lyrics by B. Reznik. The Composer: Joseph Brody (1876/1877-1937) Joseph Brody was an American Jewish composer who wrote for the Yiddish theatre as well as liturgical Jewish works. He was born in Lyakhavichy, in the Minsk Governorate of the Russian Empire. Wikipedia His path to music was rooted in the synagogue: after being noticed by cantors who visited his yeshiva, he dropped out and followed a cantor to Bia?ystok, where he became a choirboy and learned music theory. Upon losing his soprano voice, he began composing cantorial pieces and served as choir conductor under various cantors in Vilnius and Pinsk. To avoid conscription into the Russian military, his father sent for him and he emigrated to the United States around 1895-96. Brody was a composer and arranger for Second Avenue Yiddish theater productions and became one of its most productive figures. One remarkable footnote to his career: in the 1910s, Brody briefly instructed George Gershwin in composition, focusing on counterpoint, and directed a choir that Gershwin sang in.The "Morris Schwartz" credited as a performer almost certainly refers to the great Maurice (Morris) Schwartz, whose birth name was Avram Moishe Schwartz. Upon arriving in New York City's Lower East Side, Schwartz took the first name Morris. Prabook He was a stage and film actor active in the United States who founded the Yiddish Art Theatre and its associated school in 1918 in New York City, serving as its theatrical producer and director.Schwartz was the last major figure in the Yiddish theater of New York. He flourished at a time when there were about 20 Yiddish shows on Second Avenue, and his Jewish Art Theater was among the last to close. He belonged to the older theatrical tradition ? he had an impressive figure, used wide gestures, and though he tended to be flamboyant, he achieved performances of great dignity. The other performer, H. Nathanson ? The initial "H." makes precise identification difficult. The most prominent Nathansons in the Yiddish world of that era were Julius Nathanson, a well-known Yiddish stage comedian and character actor, and Moshe Nathanson, a Jerusalem-born cantor and musician. Julius Nathanson (1890-1957) was a prominent figure on the Yiddish stage known for his career as both a character actor and comedian, who had sung in a synagogue choir from childhood and later sang in a chorus at the Brodsky Synagogue in Kiev before coming to America. Wikipedia It is possible that "H. Nathanson" refers to a third family member or a lesser-documented performer of the period ? Nathanson was a common name in Yiddish theatrical circles ? and pinning down the exact individual with certainty from available records is not possible. Together, A Chaver in Leben is a beautifully typical artifact of its world: a heartfelt operetta song about loneliness and the search for love, composed by a liturgically trained immigrant musician who once taught George Gershwin, with words by a theater lyricist, and performed by artists at the heart of Second Avenue's golden age.
