In den WarenkorbCouverture rigide. Zustand: Très bon. First edition of the first book by Rouget De Lisle to present the couplets of the Marseillaise. It was composed both for the words and for the music, during the night of April 24-25, 1792, in Strasbourg, at the home of the mayor of the great Alsatian city, Dietrich, by Claude Joseph Rouget d…e Lisle (1760-1836), a simple captain of the engineering corps, native of the Jura. On June 22 of the same year, in Marseille, a medical student from Montpellier, François Mireur, sang the song at a banquet for the volunteers of the Marseille battalion who were preparing to leave for the defense of their country. From town to town, wherever they went, the Marseillais sang it with passion. The Marseillaise appears here for the first time in a volume entirely due to Rouget de Lisle and bearing his name. It is in six stanzas, as he composed it. Title: « Le Chant des Combats, vulgairement L'Hymne des Marseillois. Aux Mânes de Sylvain Bailly, premier maire de Paris ». "On July 30, 1792, the 516 men composing this battalion of Federals entered Paris: guided by Santerre "they emerged on the Bastille square, drums beating, tricolor flag unfurled, at a martial pace, singing the hymn, still unknown in Paris, of the army of the Rhine" (Ph. Sagnac, la Révolution, 1789-1792, "Histoire de France contemporaine", by Lavisse).Tears," says Father Duchesne d'Hébert, "flowed from all the eyes; the air resounded with cries of: Long live the Nation / Long live liberty!" From then on, the hymn was called Chanson des Marseillais, then, by abbreviation, Marseillaise. Sung on August 10 of the same year, still by the Marseillais battalions, when they invaded the Tuileries, adopted by the soldiers of the Republic, by those "Volunteers of 92"; it is present on the battlefields. On October 17, the Convention decided to make it the Anthem of the Republic. Decreed national song the 26 messidor year III (July 14, 1795), this title will be confirmed to him; at the beginning of the Third Republic, following a debate in the Chamber of the Deputies, on February 14, 1879. Song of the invaded country, the Marseillaise says the love of the home, the sweetness of the countryside threatened by the enemy from outside; it calls for just vengeance, for courage, for heroism; it proclaims death rather than shame. Spontaneously springing from the hearts, it was a rallying sign in victory as in defeat. " "It is a revolutionary song, coming out of the bowels of a sovereign people, in love with freedom and brotherhood, and it sounds the hour of the fight against all forms of tyranny, against all faces of oppression. As such, it was sung throughout Europe by the revolutionary troops in the assault on the monarchy and the old regime, in this sense, it is, as Michelet said, "an eternal song added to the voice of the nations." This collection also contains in prose Adélaïde de Monville, with a beautiful engraving by Gaucher after Lebarbier, in first issue. At the end : "Chant de l'Hymne à l'Espérance. Gravé par Richomme", that is this title and 5 pages of engraved words and music. Precious copy printed on fine vellum paper, preserved in its contemporary binding, one of the few containing a signed autograph dedication from Rouget de Lisle on the title « J. Rouget de Lisle au citoyen Bennezek ». From the libraries of Guilbert de Pixérecourt (Crozet, 1838, n°705 of the catalog) and of Doctor Lucien Graux with ex-libris (n°155 of the catalog of the sale of 18 June 1958).

The First American Printing of the Marseillaise. In a Volume of Early American Sheet Music from the 1790s and early 1800s: The Beginnings of American Popular Music. This wonderful and extensive bound collection of mostly American sheet music (see below for a complete inventory), includes the first American edition of the Marseillaise, with the words in English and French, published in 1793 by Benjamin Carr & Co. of Philadelphia. La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, was written in April 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, and was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1795 by the French National Convention. Originally titled Chant de Guerre Pour l'Armee du Rhin (War Song of the Rhine Army) the song got its moniker after volunteers in a battalion from Marseille sung it while marching to Paris. By September of 1792 it had acquired the name Hymne des Marseillaise. Soon thereafter London publishers issued it as The Marseilles March. The very rare first American publication of the music and words of the Marseillaise contained in the present volume was published by Benjamin Carr (1768-1831), who left England in 1793 to establish his music shop at 136 High Street in Philadelphia. His father Joseph Carr soon joined him in America, as did a brother named Thomas, opening a music establishment in Baltimore. Late in the same year (1793) of his establishment in Philadelphia, Benjamin Carr must have copied one of the London versions to produce his own Marseilles Hymn or Marche des Marseillois. Both Carr's and the London versions share the same keyboard arrangements. Carr also retained the original French verses, which appear on the third sheet following the main English adaptation. Interestingly, Carr's also published the first printing of the words and music of the Star Spangled Banner (Baltimore, 1814), a copy of which sold at Christie's in 2010 for $506,500.Despite Jeremy Bentham calling it "the war whoop of anarchy," the Marseillaise has had a wide-ranging cultural impact far beyond the borders of France. Composers from Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky to Debussy and Lennon and McCartney have quoted it in their own work. And the special relationship between France and the United States, specifically the political and social background underpinning both the American Revolution and the French Revolution, contribute greatly to the interest of the first American appearance of the Marseillaise.Myron Gray's recent work, French Revolutionary Song for Federal Philadelphia discusses how the pioneering music publisher Benjamin Carr reconciled French Revolutionary music for the Philadelphia market at a controversial moment in Franco-American relations:For Carr, whose elite, music-reading clients were often conservative, the publication of radical French songs was, on the face of it, a risky venture. Gray argues that Carr softened the radicalism of French revolutionary. Book.

| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] One of the very rare copies enriched with an autograph - there are fewer than a dozen - of this first edition, featuring the Marseillaise. First edition illustrated with an engraving inset engraved by Charles-Etienne Gaucher after Jean-Jacques Le Barbier and 4 pages of score engraved at the end of the volume. The Marseillaise appears in its real first edition, having been the subject of a pre-publication in the Almanac of the Muses in 1793 and in the form of loose leaflets. Binding semi-sheepskin contemporary, smooth back adorned with boxes, jewels and gilded lace, title label red morocco, black cardboard boards. Several ex-libris handwritten or glued on the contreplat and the guards. Back restored, some foxinges. The last two letters of the dedicatee's name have been trimmed to binding. The book is enriched on the fake page of an exceptional autograph from Rouget de L'Isle to another artist of the Revolution: "M de La Chabeaussie [re] / from the author". Rouget de Lisle and Poisson de la Chabeaussière, the recipient of the consignment, both embodied the revolutionary fervor and marked Republican history by their pen. The Marseillaise appears in the book on page [PAGE?] Among other poems and songs. This first edition delivers the famous song in its original state. It comprises six quatrains, as written by Captain Rouget de l'Isle for the Army of the Rhine in April 1792, then instituted national anthem in 1795 by the decree of 26 Messidor year III. Paroliers and men of letters, Rouget de l'Isle and Chabeaussière were the zealous servants of the Revolution but also the victims of its excesses. At the writing of this dedication, in year V of the Republic, the two men are at the summit of their glory. One is the author of the national anthem that thrills revolutionary France, and the other the most popular republican catechism during the Revolution. Indeed, the Chabeaussière also composes a major work of the revolutionary inheritance: a republican, philosophical and moral Catechism , reissued 82 times until the Third Republic, and which promoted it to the Executive Commission of the public instruction . Like Rouget de L'Isle, he has enjoyed success as a lyricist and libr.

| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] One of the very few copies bearing an autograph inscriptionfewer than ten are recordedof this firs (4) 157 pp. ; 5 pp.
