[++] "Scientist, inventor, and industrialist Warren de la Rue's interest in astronomy led to his involvement with photography. In 1853 De La Rue first attempted to photograph the moon; four years later he made stereographs of it. During an expedition to Spain to view a total solar eclipse on July 18, 1860, he made photographs of the event. He continued his investigation into celestial photography throughout the 1860s, publishing and lecturing on the subject."--J. Paul Getty Museum.…

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the findings of the author's astronomical expedition to Spain in 1860 to observe a total eclipse of the sun. The author was motivated by previous astronomical photography successes and desired to expand this newfound technique to capturing the elusive totality phase of an eclipse. The narrative details the many obstacles the author faced in preparing for the expedition, including acquiring materials and equipment, traveling to the remote observation site, and overcoming challenges such as inclement weather, equipment malfunctions, and lost time. Included in this volume are the results of observations made during the eclipse, accompanied by a series of photographs the author took during totality, which are considered groundbreaking at the time. These photographs captured unprecedented detail of the solar corona and surrounding prominences, revolutionising our understanding of the sun's outer atmosphere. The author also discusses the significance of these findings within the broader context of solar astronomy and highlights their enduring legacy in advancing our knowledge of the sun. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Fair. The de la Rue is a fine article with several beautiful illustrations. Unfortunately the rear wrapper is half gone and the spine cover is also about half worn away. That said the text is pretty nice. Anyway, here it is, discounted, a good paper related to the very early development of television by one of the maybe-HE-invented-the-lightbulb folks, and pioneer in astro photography.…
