Illustrated dj has a tear on the bottom corner of the front cover and a small tear and chip on the top hinge of the front cover. Chips to the front edge of the back cover. Maps on inside front covers showing the distribution of Indian Tribes and U.S. Military Forts 1870-1875 are in fine condition. This is a collection of rare photographs lost for over 100 years and just recently rediscovered. They are of incredible historical as well as artistic value. All text and photos are clean and unmarked. Hinges are tight. All of our books are individually inspected and described. Never ex-lib unless explicitly described as such.

This rare collection of photographs was lost for almost 100 years. These photographs, taken by William Stinson Soule, a young Civil War veteran, at Fort Sill between 1869 and 1874 are published here for the first time. Soule's important photographs include many different tribes: Kiowas, Apaches, Kiowa-Apaches, Cheyenne, Wichitas, Caddos, Arapahoes, and Comanches. Included among the photographs are such Chiefs and warriors as Satanta, Setank, Kicking Bird, Big Tree, Lone Wolf, Stumbling Bear, Little Raven, Mow-way, and many others. The accompanying text gives a biography of Soule; offers cultural insight into the various tribes photographed; and describes each photograph and gives a biography of each Indian photographed. Former owner's name in top corner of endpaper, else a fine copy. Price-clipped dust jacket shows some very slight wear to spine ends and a 1"x1" piece missing near top edge of spine.
