Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Good -. Maroon cloth with embossed design; gilt title; decorated endpapers; 56 pages. Second, revised edition; first published 1886. During the late nineteenth century, the author and her pastor husband ran a home boarding and day school for young ladies in Manhattan. The genealogical part of this book, pages 23-56, and including Scottish tables, consolidates a great deal of information which, in that period, was not provided elsewhere in any one book.Light rubbing to cover extremities; partial splitting to cloth at front spine edge. Damp exposure to tail of spine and lower adjoining edges of boards is not obvious at the exterior, but moderate dampstains appear at lower margins, spreading from spine, of most interior pages. Few tiny black ink spots to rear board. Prior owner signature, date at front endpaper. Front signatures loose. First text page detached, now with tiny spots of glue repair to minimize further damage. Two light stray lines of ink on page 44. Otherwise clean and intact, and not as bad as it sounds.

Erstausgabe
First Edition. First impression. Octavo (22cm). Blue cloth gilt; dustjacket; [vi],[14]-404,[4]pp; folding map inserted between end of text and index. Tight, clean and unmarked, Near Fine; in the original printed dustwrapper, unclipped (priced 16s. at base of front flap); jacket lightly worn, still Very Good or better. An attractive copy. Rigby (1820-1885) was the second British consul at Zanzibar, serving from 1858 to 1860. He was an energetic opponent of the slave trade and, though he did not succeed in fully suppressing the traffic in enslaved people during his time in Zanzibar (where the last slave market would not close until 1873), he did manage to free more than eight thousand slaves during his two-year tenure. This volume includes a full transcription of Rigby's lively journal, the original of which was sold at Bonham's in 2021 for more than £50,000. A nice copy of a somewhat uncommon book, rarely seen in its dustwrapper.
