Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. The Mad River Country and The Old Skating Pond with Other Verse by Orton G. Rust and Theodore J. Rebert was published by the United Brethren Publishing House, Dayton, Ohio, in 1915. Not an ex-library copy, this 5 1/4" X 7 1/2", 153-page, 97-year-old, believed-to-be First Edition offering is in good condition. There is some yellowing of endpapers front and back as well as the text's pages, some webbing is seen the length of center seam between pages 112-113, there are light-brown scratch marks on left-hand side of front cover board as well as a small nick in the cloth, right underneath the title, of same, and there is a small hole near the very bottom of the main Title page. Most notably, there is an ongoing, light brownish stain(probably water-caused), in the middle third of the top edges of, roughly, pages 61-146, which, although annoying, does not interfere with the readability of the book. From authors' Preface, "In offering these lines for the consideration of the public, the writers are well aware of the vast abundance of better verse. .We have read and have believed, that every book into which a man has honestly attempted to put the best part of himself, contains at least one thing worthy of anyone's remembering. .The worlds of thought and emotion have always offered freely to all men. One should wish to make some return, however small. Therefore, so desiring, we hold it shameful, not to have failed, but never to have tried. In the spirit of such sincere endeavor, we send out this book to seek its friends." With that somewhat apologetic, well-meaning beginning, here is a collection of some 75 poems, by Rust and Rebert, which, for the most part, celebrate/depict the pioneer spirit of,the fighting for, and the eventual settling and development of the Northwest Territory early on, before it was carved into the group of individual states that we know today. The exploits, adventures, and contributions of such notables as Simon Kenton, Tecumseh, George Rogers Clark, Daniel Boone, James Smith, as well as Girty, Harmon, St. Clair, and Stover, are necessarily in play within works such as Rust's "The Mad River Country". Sentimentality is very much in abundance, too, in such works as "The Old Skating Pond", "A Dog", "Church Bells", "My Mother", "Old Glory", "The Teacher", "The Young Lady So Good!", and "The Little Gray Bunny". And, there are some half a dozen black and white photos or Drawings(all very nicely done, very much in the style of that period), with one, in particular, by Nellie Rebert. This is early 20th-century Americana, Reader, in the form of late-Victorian style poetry, with all of its earnest innocence, and trappings. Thanks very much!!
