Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This translation of A Brief History of Radio Astronomy in the USSR makes descriptions of the antennas and instrumentation used in the USSR, the astronomical discoveries, as well as interesting personal backgrounds of many of the early key players in Soviet radio astronomy available in the English language for the first time. This book is a collection of memoirs recounting an interesting but largely still dark era of Soviet astronomy. The arrangement of the essays is determined primarily by the time when radio astronomy studies began at the institutions involved. These include the Lebedev Physical Institute (FIAN), Gorkii State University and the affiliated Physical-Technical Institute (GIFTI), Moscow State University Sternberg Astronomical institute (GAISH) and Space Research Institute (IKI), the Department of Radio Astronomy of the Main Astronomical Observatory in Pulkovo (GAO), Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO), Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine (SSR), Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IRE), Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, the Ionosphere and Radio-Wave Propagation Institute (IZMIRAN), Siberian Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, the Ionosphere and Radio-Wave Propagation (SibIZMIRAN), the Radio Astrophysical Observatory of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and Leningrad State University.A Brief History of Radio Astronomy in the USSR is a fascinating source of information on a past era of scientific culture and fields of research including the Soviet SETI activities. Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. 16.75 x 11.5 inches, 49 pp. in cloth boards with large Palekh lacquer-style mounted illustration, illustrated endpapers, in original publisher's box. Chromolithograph title page, 10 full-page lacquer-style plates by Golikov, each within an individual chromolithographed border, decorative page ornaments and initials. Golikov was a well known Russian icon painter. The text, considered a masterpiece of Old Russian literature, is "an account of the unsuccessful campaign in 1185 of Prince Igor of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsy (Kipchak, or Cumans). As in the great French epic The Song of Roland, Igor's heroic pride draws him into a combat in which the odds are too great for him. Though defeated, Igor escapes his captors and returns to his people. The tale was written anonymously (118587) and preserved in a single manuscript, which was discovered in 1795 by A.I. Musin-Pushkin, published in 1800, and lost during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812" (Britannica).…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. IVAN GOLIKOV (1734?1801). The Tale of Igor?s Campaign, edited by V. Rzhiga and S. Shambinago, Academia, Moscow, 1934. Text in Old Russian, including lacquered illustrations by the artist Ivan Golikov. Folio. 50 pages. First edition thus. Folio (43 x 30cm). Publisher's original bevelled brown cloth with large illustrated Palekh style lacquer mounts printed in colour and gilt. Page edges untrimmed. Red silk ribbon page-marker. Illustrated endpapers in colour and gilt. Title page printed in red and black with decorative foliate colour border. Text in Old East Slavic, printed in red and black. Illustrated with 10 mounted colour plates resembling lacquer (including the frontispiece), within decorative colour borders, as well as numerous head- and tailpieces in colour, black and gilt, and black and white. A magnificent edition of the epic poem 'The Tale of Igor's Campaign' sumptuously bound and illustrated with designs after the Palekh artist Ivan Golikov (1887-1937). Written in the Old East Slavic language in the late twelfth century, the poem describes a failed raid made in year 1185 by Kniaz Igor Svyatoslavich, Prince of Novgorod-Seversk, on the Polovtsians living along the lower Don. Based around the themes of Slavic patriotism, homeland, the co-existence of Christianity and ancient Slavic religion, and the power and role of nature in shaping human lives, the work takes the form of a national epic, emphasising the unity of the peoples of the region, incorporating numerous notable Rus' historical figures. Ivan Golikov was a key figure in the development of the Russian art of Palekh miniature painting, originally a folk handicraft drawing upon the tradition of icon painting, in which miniature paintings were executed using tempera paints on varnished/lacquered items made of papier-mâché (such as small boxes, powder cases, and other luxury items). The present work forms a most suitable subject for Golikov's artistry; the text and illustrations complementing each other perfectly. Russian language. In cyrillic characters. "externally good, some corner damage, scratches, scrapes , cloth tear, insides very good, some browning pages 32 and 33 from bookmark". Ivan Golikov (illustrator).…
