Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Summers approaches Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) from an unusually productive angle: rather than simply retelling the famous adventurer's exploits, she reconstructs the lives and identities of the women who figured most importantly in them. Chapters include his actress mother Zanetta, Donna Lucrezia, Bellino, Henriette, M.M. and C.C., Manon Balletti, the Marquise d'Urfe, Marianne de Charpillon, Pauline, Sophia Williams, and Teresa Imer Cornelys. Summers explains that Casanova disguised many lovers' identities in his memoirs and that her identifications draw upon his Histoire de ma Vie together with archival and secondary scholarship. Contemporary bibliographic descriptions specifically note her use of period diaries, correspondence, wills, and memoirs. A particularly handsome production, with blue cloth boards and a striking art-historical jacket. Jacket design by Sarah Morris; front jacket art reproduces Jean-Marc Nattier's Manon Balletti, from the National Gallery, while the rear reproduces Jean-Honore Fragonard's The Stolen Kiss, from the Bridgeman Art Library. Author photograph by Jerry Bauer. The volume was typeset by Hewer Text UK Ltd., Edinburgh, and printed in the United States by Quebecor World Fairfield. The text is set in Berling roman, designed by Swedish typographer Karl-Erik Forsberg between 1951-58, an unusually specific typographic note that gives the book an additional book-design interest beyond its subject. Condition: Fine/Near Fine. Book is Fine, with clean, attractive blue cloth, tight and square binding, sharp presentation, and clean interior pages with no markings found. Original unclipped dust jacket is Near Fine, bright and complete, retaining the $25.95 price, with only very light shelf/edge wear at the extremities. An exceptionally attractive example of the First U.S. Edition. This edition has a rather clever relationship between its jacket art and its contents. The woman pictured prominently on the front jacket is not simply a generic eighteenth-century beauty: she is Manon Balletti, one of the women in Casanova's life and the subject of Chapter Seven. The portrait is by Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766), and the jacket credit identifies the original as belonging to the National Gallery. Thus Sarah Morris' jacket design places an actual woman from Casanova's biography - not Casanova himself - at the visual center of the book, neatly reinforcing Summers' decision to tell his story through the women surrounding him. The production details are also unusually thoughtful for a modern trade biography. The publisher devotes a separate colophon to Berling roman, the mid-century typeface designed by Karl-Erik Forsberg, whose old-style characteristics were deliberately incorporated into a modern face. Combined with the eighteenth-century paintings selected for the jacket, it gives the book a subtle historical visual vocabulary without resorting to a conventional portrait of Casanova.
