Verlag: Greenwood, MS: Educational Fund of the Citizens' Councils, 1956., 1956
Anbieter: David Hallinan, Bookseller, Columbus, MS, USA
12 pages plus covers (16 pages total). Original Citizens' Councils staple-bound booklet: H 22.5cm x L 10.25cm. White paper with light toning and minor foxing; front cover's top fore-edge corner creased. A very good copy of a scarce publication as OCLC locates copies of this booklet at only seven member institutions. Front cover indicates that Charleston, South Carolina author Herbert Ravenel Sass' text was taken from "The Congressional Record" where it had been entered as a stunt by South Carolina U.S. Representative Lucius Mendel Rivers (who served on the board of advisors of the national Citizens' Councils of America) in order to give the tract an air of authority but, of course, any congressman can get any tripe submitted into the House or Senate record without it ever having been orated on the floor of either chamber. One of a number of propaganda publications issued by the Greenwood, Mississippi-based Association of Citizens' Councils spouting their "intellectual" drivel in order to further the segregationist cause, MIXED SCHOOLS AND MIXED BLOOD focuses upon the evils of school integration which, in the bigoted perspective of Sass, could only lead to miscegenation and a lack of racial integrity among other horrors. Still an interesting "stoke the fear, stoke the fire" diatribe adhering to the long tradition of American pamphleteering and hate literature. Any original Citizens' Councils' imprints are now quite difficult to find and their ephemera remain intriguing tragic relics ripe with indefensible attitudes and arguments but are still vital for an understanding of the era as they document the mindset of those so vehemently opposed to the civil rights movement. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. {MS-Shelf #10}.
