Although perhaps lacking some of the glamour of their larger transatlantic cousins, the myriad vessels which have seen service between the south coast of England and the Channel Islands and north-west France do exercise a fascination all of their own. In this highly detailed and well researched book, Kevin Le Scelleur traces the story right back to 1823 when the first shipping companies were formed to begin operating these services. In 1857 came the formation of the Weymouth and Channel Islands Steam Packet Company and from this point onwards the Great Western Railway assumed an increasingly important role on these routes. From these unassuming beginnings, the author traces the story right up to today's Sealink service, giving details of how the steamers continued operating during the First World War, how they assisted in the evacuation and eventual rehabilitation of the Channel Islands during the Second, and showing how increasing airline competition caused a decline in shipping services until the introduction of modern roll on/roll off car ferries. The book documents every vessel (including relief ships) used on these routes, with illustrations of practically all of them. It gives specifications together with brief details of each ship's career, forming a unique reference source for all ship lovers which is particularly timely in view of the imminent privatisation of Sealink. Kevin Le Scelleur, who lives in Jersey, spent several years undertaking the research for this book, which involved visits to the Public Records Office and the Guildhall Library, London, in addition to harbour offices and libraries in the Channel Islands.
