Die Forschungsfrage lautet, inwieweit die Erklärungen der drei Radikalisierungsmodelle mit dem ausgewählten Fall Abaaoud übereinstimmen und welches Modell die größte Erklärungskraft aufweisen kann. Die Datengrundlage umfasst verfügbare Informationen über den Radikalisierungsprozess und die Lebensumstände von Abaaoud vor der Radikalisierung. Zwei Phasenmodelle unterscheiden sich hinsichtlich ihrer Darstellung des Radikalisierungsprozesses (top-down vs. bottom-up) sowie den zugrundeliegenden Dynamiken und zentralen Ursachen. Das dritte Modell ist kein Phasenmodell, sondern ein root-cause model und erklärt Radikalisierung auf eine andere Weise. Ziel der Fallstudie ist es, einen Beitrag zum theoretischen Diskurs in der Radikalisierungsforschung zu leisten, indem die Modelle mit dem ausgewählten Fall empirisch überprüft werden.
