Winifred Davidson writing as Yetta Kay Stoddard, (1874 1964), was an author of children's short stories and poetry as well as a founding member of the San Diego Historical Society. In the 1920s she wrote for The Brownies' Book which existed for 24 monthly issues under the leadership of Jessie Redmon Fauset. It was aimed at a multiracial group of children readers, but primarily African Americans. "Yetta Kay Stoddard" was identified as one of their "notable black writers". Davidson worked as a local historian in partnership with her husband, John. They were married for over sixty years and were credited with curating the largest store of information on the history of San Diego. She has the Historian and her husband was the curator and finally Director of the Junipero Serra Museum in Presidio Park. Davidson with George Marston and John Nolan. She was also President of the American Literary Association for ten years and vice-President of the British Poetry Society. in exceptionally good condition.

Dust jacket is clean and intact overall but has offsetting on front and back, fading on top and bottom edges and along spine, and several chips along top and bottom edges (largest is 3/4" x 3/4" at bottom edge on front panel). A Very Good book in a Very Good dust jacket. This book contains the printed text of manuscripts documenting the mission activities of Junipero Serra; one of his pupils, Francisco Palou; and Jose de Galvez. The letters' authors include Serra, Palou, Galvez, and some of their other contemporaries. Two paper ephemera laid in: a paper announcement noting that "this" (likely "The Founding of the First California Missions") is the first book published by the Nueva California Press and another paper announcement for another title, "The Expedition into California of the Venerable Padre Fray Junipero Serra and his companions in the year 1769." Back colophon: "One thousand copies of this book were printed in San Francisco at the Nueva California Press in the year of the 150th anniversary of the death of Padre Fray Junipero Serra by Lawton R. Kennedy, John J. Johnck, Harold N. Seeger and Douglas S. Watson." Kennedy, Johnck, Seeger, and Watson were noted members of the early twentieth-century Bay Area printing scene.
