Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. NYC: David Mckay, 1974. 1st edition, 32nd printing, NF/VG. Book has some wear to spine ends and a few ink smears on front end-paper. DJ wear to spine ends& corners, light edge wear, light color fad & two small marks on spine. Shapell (changed from Schapelski) was 23 at the end of WWII, and found himself homeless, and with his sister the only living relative (they survived Auschwitz), managed to get to Germany. Here they became part of the thousands of displaced persons who were hated by the Germans and mostly ignored by the American military presence. They spent many years helping these displaced thousands rebuild their lives, built a school, an orphanage for Jewish children and helped the American authorities deal with this tremendous tragedy. A mensh (both of them) of the highest degree. Wonderful memoir, great read. 386 pp. PK/GB.
