Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is actually a compilation of essays by many writers about ancient and early Asian and European history with the addition of a great many illustrations. The book has sound hinges and is not cocked. There are a few words on the first free endpage; otherwise pages are clean, unmarked and undamaged. Exterior covers are clean and the gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There is a small bump on the back cover and one shallow dent in the top edge of the back cover. No bumped corners or rubbing to extremities. The dust jacket is clean with light toning (age tanning) to the white portions (inside flaps). It has a single small tear and a light crease at the top edge of the inside front flap and a couple of other light creases near the top edge. Very little wear otherwise. It has been put in a clear archival sleeve to keep it looking great. The book, dust jacket and sleeve will be bubble-wrapped and carefully packed in a sturdy box to ensure safe transit. This is a heavy, oversize book that will probably require extra funds for shipping outside of the United States. The following essays (or chapters) are included: "Gift of the Nile" by Leonard Cottrell; "The First Law Code" by Jean Bottero; "The Eruption of Santorin" by M.S.F. Hood; "The Aryan Invasion of India" by Eric J. Sharpe; "Let My People Go" by James Parkes; Ramses III Defeats the Sea Peoples" by Marcel Brion; "The Prophet of the East" by Trevor Ling; "Victorious Athens" by Peter Green; "The Death of Alexander the Great" by George Woodcock; "Building the Great Wall of China" by D. Howard Smith; "Hannibal Challenges Rome" by Gilbert Charles-Picard; "The Slaves' Revolt" by Jack Lindsay; "The Battle of Actium" by Michael Grant; "Arminius, Liberator of Germany" by Michael Grant; "Jesus of Nazareth, Savior God of a New Religion" by S.G.F. Brandon; "The Destruction of Zion" by S.G.F. Brandon; "In This Sign Shalt Thou Conquer" by Robert Browning; "Mission to Ireland" by Nora Chadwick; "The Scourge of God" by Jean Favier; "The Rule of St. Benedict" by David Knowles; "The Flight to Medina" by S.M. Stern; "Japanese Renaissance" by Geoffrey Hindley; "A Crown for Charlemagne" by Friedrich Heer; and "England for the English" by Jack Lindsay.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The ancient churches and cathedrals of England's towns and countryside are among the glories of our national heritage, the church spire one of the quintessential features of the landscape. Yet how were our ancestors able to construct these often substantial edifices without the benefit of modern techniques? How did medieval masons plan, design and oversee their construction? What methods of construction were used to achieve the magnificent church spires and ceilings that we marvel at today? Geoffrey R. Sharpe brings more that forty years of experience of managing and caring for historic buildings to provide a unique guide to the design and construction of our historic churches and cathedrals. Building a cathedral could require a workforce of 300 to 400 men, the quarrying of 80,000 tons of stone and involve the felling of 1500 trees. How all this was organized, managed and realized is explained in this compelling volume. The author deals with all aspects - from original planning and preparation, to the final construction and decoration. The layout and choice of materials, the construction of the foundations, walls and ceilings, the work of the highly skilled medieval masons, blacksmiths and carpenters are all described and explained. Individual aspects of church architecture such as corbels, tracery and windows, as well as important features of church interiors such as galleries, burial vaults and screens are included. And in a final chapter the author shows the reader how to assess the history and development of a church from the constructional and architectural clues contained within its features. The result is a work that will add a whole new dimension to understanding English church building and architecture. Geoffrey R. Sharpe brings more that forty years of experience of managing and caring for historic buildings to provide a unique guide to the design and construction of our historic churches and cathedrals.
