Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Are you with India or against India? This is the dominant question facing every Kashmiri Muslim today. When Khalid Jehangir asked himself this question, he realised that he wanted to be with India. He also felt Kashmir needed to be with India. Why? Khalid wants to tell the world, Kashmiri Muslims are as nationalistic as anyone else. They want to be a part of India, moving rapidly towards becoming a developed nation, on a prosperity arc. Khalid feels BJP as a political force is evolving in Jammu and Kashmir and will bring in the integration that Kashmir needs. In his book, he says Kashmir s aspirational youth are fed up of terrorism, which has destroyed its tourism and economy. They have no hopes of jobs, nor futures. Religious militancy is not what Kashmir is all about. He reiterates, Kashmiris have always practised the Islam of Sufis which is about syncretism. Hizbul and Jamaat-e-Islami extremists call it kufr. Khalid s marriage to a Christian girl from Thanjavur introduced him to the multi-religious, secular India. Though a Muslim, he was married in a temple and in a church and he shared a meal with Hindu priests and Christian Fathers. It is Khalid s quest for a secular democratic Kashmir that has brought forth this book that profiles through a personal journey, a larger political perspective. (jacket).

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. A rare early guide and description. Original colour illustrated wraps 17x24cm. (68)pp English and Arabic texts with colour royal portraits, several colour and vintage b/w photos, full-page floor plan, and double-page map showing RAK's position in the UAE. Near fine, rubbed and lightly bumped at the corners. Undated, but the latest reference spotted in the text is to happenings during 1987 (it apparently predates the findings of Burkhard Vogt's Umm an-Narr era rescue excavations at Asimah in 1987-88). No author is indicated, but the Preface by Sheikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Deputy Ruler of RAK and Director of Antiquities and Tourism, credits the Museum's formation to Beatrice de Cardi, Walter Dosal, Carl Phillips, Vogt, Major Tim Ash and Jayanth Laxman among others. This guidebook describes the Museum's fine historic building, its collections and benefactors. It was originally built as a fort during the Persian era (1736-49), after which it became a family home for the Qasimi Sheikhs up to the early 1960s, a Police HQ, and then a prison. Ash initiated plans for the Museum and its ethnographic collection in the 1970s, with de Cardi leading the archaeological excavations. In 1984, Jayanth Laxman began restoration using traditional methods and locally sourced materials as far as possible. The Museum opened in 1987. Other sections describe its natural history collections, Archeology Gallery, ethnography (pearling, fishing, agriculture, crafts, Bedouin, falconry, silver, weapons, costume), and the Quwasim Room.

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. "History and Events Confirm the Arabian Nature of the Islands & Gulf" (back cover). Original gilt-titled colour illustrated wraps with French flaps 18x24cm. Printed by RAK National Printing Press. (2)pp prelims, 318pp text with many colour and b/w photos, maps, and facsimile documents, (2)pp map, (1)pp. English language edition translated from the Arabic, both undated c2000. Wraps good, worn to the spine ends and creased to the corners. Interiors good, yellowing at the edges with rippling to the leaves. This presents the UAE's official position on its dispute with Iran over the highly strategic islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's undocumented claims date back to the C6th BCE, while those of the UAE are supported by official British documents from the early 1800s. Prior to exiting the Gulf the British had helped Sharjah and Iran reach agreement to divide Abu Musa into 2 zones, but RAK and Iran failed to come to terms over the Tunbs. Thus in 1971 Iran entered its zone on Abu Musa peacefully, and took the Tunbs by force. UAE perceived that Britain and the US had favoured Iran, seeing the Shah as a source of regional stability. This changed with the 1979 Revolution. Tensions increased during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88), when Iran fired on Iraqi and Kuwaiti ships from Abu Musa, and used the islands as a base for its Revolutionary Guards. In 1992 Iran annexed Sharjah's zone on Abu Musa, and rejected several offers to resolve through the ICJ and UN. The author, a member of the Arab Historians Union and Arab Journalists Union, reviews pre-colonial history and Persian ambition from the time of Alexander the Great, considers the strategic importance in colonial times, and finally Iran's seizure, Arab reactions, and attempts to resolve. He also assesses the impact of Iranian rule, and the legal claims. Photos show the islands, dignitaries and officials. Facsimiles reproduce Arab and British correspondence including Anglo-Iranian Oil Company letters and maps seeking RAK permission to explore in the Tunbs. Rare. (Ref. Al-Mazrouei, "Disputed Islands between UAE and Iran", 2015).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Two very rare items relating to the establishment of Kuwait University and its early years. The Inauguration is in its original blue cloth, gilt-titled in English and Arabic with University crest 18x25cm, 45 + 149pp with English and Arabic texts, colour crest plate and several colour and b/w photos and documents. Covers very good, interiors fine. The Prospectus is in its original blue printed wraps 17x24cm, English text only, 220pp, (3) contents, colour crest plate, (15) statistics, (11) full-page b/w photos. Covers very good, interiors near fine except for some inked sidelines and ticks. Both were printed by the Al-Assriya Printing Press, Kuwait. The Government began to discuss founding its first university in 1960, with the Constitution (1962) reinforcing its commitment to free public education. The opening of Kuwait University in 1966 marked the launch of the nation's higher education system. At the time of inauguration it had a Faculty for Science, Arts and Education, a University College for Women, and was drawing up a Master Plan for faculties in commerce, law, medicine and pharmacy (pp23, 25). INAUGURATION: This commemorative work records the addresses by HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah al-Salim al-Sabah, HE Khalid al-Masul al-Fahied (Education Minister and Chancellor), Prof Abdel Fattah Ismail (Rector), and Miss Latifa Al-Bassam on behalf of the students. It also includes the guest list, University Council, academic staff, and demonstrators. The event was attended by delegations from Algeria, Bahrain, Czechoslovakia, Ethiopia, France, Hungary, India, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAR, UK, USA, Yugoslavia, the Arab League, UNESCO, FAO, and the Regional Centre of Educational Planning for Arab Nations. The Amir described the University as "the main source of education in our country", "a lighthouse for science and research", and "by far the best possible gift conferred by a state on its loyal subjects and its youth" (pp17-18). The Education Minister called it the fourth in a line of significant national events (after the discovery of oil, independence, and creation of the National Assembly), and the most remarkable in Ministry history. He includes a history of education in Kuwait, starting with the first government school in 1912, with details about growing school, student and teacher numbers. An immediate result is that secondary school exams are being set in Kuwait for the first time (until then set by the UAR Ministry of Education in Cairo). The Rector describes the foundation and immediate growth plans. The student representative reflects on the development of education over the last 30 years, and the opportunities this is providing. Photos show scenes from the event, opening with the Amir inscribing the Golden Register, and numerous formal documents. PROSPECTUS: This opens with a description of the foundation, progress with Faculties of Law and Sharia, and Commerce, Economics and Political Science starting in 1967, and plans for a Faculty of Medicine and new buildings. Chapters detail the University's structure; administration, staff, demonstrators, language teachers and mission members; student affairs; courses; student activities (unions, committees, sports, social etc); libraries; Roll of Honour; and data by faculty, year, gender, nationality etc. The tables on nationalities for example show that of the total student population of 1713, 1240 were Kuwaiti, 256 from other Gulf states and South Arabia (o/w 153 Bahrain, 47 South Yemen), and 217 other Arab and other nationalities (o/w 56 Jordan, 51 UAR, 32 Palestinian). Among the new Kuwaiti entrants, women and men were closely balanced, with women by far most attracted to the Arts (104/190), and men more evenly spread with commerce most popular (58/194). Photos show scenes from the Inauguration, a lab at the College for Women, Main Library interior, netball and swimming.
