Black and white/colo-tinted illustrations by Edward Shenton throughout the book. A small marking in pencil is present below the price. Slight staining at the bottom of the front flap. The panels are toned and a little stained. Some chipping and tearing at the spine especially. The lettering on the spine and front panel is intact. The book is in very good plus condition. The cloth boards retain their bright green color, and are very well-preserved. Light shelf wear on the spine. The gilt lettering on the spine and front board is intact, bright and legible. The previous owner's last name is written in pencil on the front endpaper. Very scattered and minor foxing throughout, along with the occasional underlining/note in pencil. The text block is bright, largely clean, and complete. The black and white illustrations present throughout the book are well-preserved. The binding is sound. The Unvanquished was first published serially in The Saturday Evening Post in 6 separate issues, 1934-5. One of the illustrations here shows the "Skirmish at Sartoris" episode, published as "Drusilla" in April 1935. Edward Shenton (1895-1977) was a prolific commercial illustrator, contributing to over 130 books, including The Yearling, Tender Is the Night and Green Hills of Africa.
