Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. viii. [4], 276 pages. Illustrations. Further Reading. DJ has some wear, soiling, tears and chips. Donna Lee Shirley (born 1941) is a former manager of Mars Exploration at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She is the author of the book Managing Martians. Asteroid 5624 Shirley was named in her honor. She worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) from 1966 to 1998. When she joined JPL, she was the only woman among the 2,000 engineers who had an engineering degree. She served as mission analyst and later program manager for the Mariner 10 mission to Venus and Mercury. She led a research team studying a Mars rover. She was Mars Exploration Program manager, and led teams for Mars Pathfinder and Sojourner rover. In 1997, she was inducted into the Women in Technology Hall of Fame, and in 1998 she was inducted into the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame. Shirley officially retired as manager of the Mars Exploration Program on August 21, 1998. In 2004, she became President of Managing Creativity, a platform where she shares her strategies for using the collective creativity of groups to develop ideas, then turn them into products. She is a well-known educator, speaker, and consultant. Derived from a Kirkus review: Shirley led the design team that built the microwave-size, six-legged robot that explored Mars in the Pathfinder project launched July 4, 1997. â "Sojournerâ " traversed 100 meters of Martian surface, returning 550 images and 15 chemical analyses of soil and rocks, far exceeding expectations. The story opens with the successful launch, not without a few hairy moments, and then flashes back to the young Shirley, the tomboy offspring of the premier families of Wynnewood, Oklahoma. Donna's ambition was to become an aeronautical engineer. She took flying lessons at 16 and got her degree in aerospace/mechanical engineering. She landed the job at the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Lab, where she has spent the last 30 years moving up, eventually being named Mars program manager. There is a special appeal for women in this saga: Shirley is of a prefeminist generation. She had a lifelong dream of getting to Mars and discovered that sheer hard work, respect for talent, and well-honed management skills got her there. Never say die! First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
