Told in first person from the point of view of a ten-year-old boy growing up in Pontal de Coruripe, a small fishing village in north-east Brazil. Bico lives in an area of extreme poverty but is uplifted by participating in rich cultural traditions. Through his eyes the reader joins the villagers at market and takes part in a procession for Sao Pedro and a festival for Iemanja, the goddess of the sea.
