John Sturm's big league baseball career lasted only one season, with the World Series-winning New York Yankees. He entered the Yankees starting lineup May 15, the same day Joe DiMaggio began his 56 game hitting streak, and his steady play at 1st and as lead-off batter helped to steady a struggling Yankees team. Later that year he became the first married player to enter military service for WWII. Due to an injury suffered during his service and later injuries playing ball, he never made back into another big league game. Roy Weatherly played 10 seasons in the bigs, with Cleveland, the Yankees, and the New York Giants. Traded to the Yankees after the 1942 season, he appeared in one at bat in the 1943 World Series. He missed two seasons, 1944-45, while serving in WWII. "I don't have to tell you that every ballplayer's prayers are directed toward New York and a job with the Yankees." - Roy Weatherly (1943) in Baseball's Greatest Quotes (1982).
