"Francis Butler Simkins (December 14, 1897 - February 8, 1966) was a historian and president of the Southern Historical Association. He is best known for his highly praised history of the Reconstruction Era in South Carolina, that gave fair coverage to all sides, and for his widely used textbook The South, Old and New (1947) and his monographs on South Carolina history. He was a colorful if eccentric professor at a small college in Virginia. He was a leading progressive in the 1920s and 1930s regarding race relations, but became more conservative in the 1950s and 1960s. Signed by author.

All but the first title are from that series. Sophia Lee with "The Recess: A Tale of The Days Of Queen Elizabeth" 1840 was published by J. Cunningham. The other titles in bound order are; D.F. Gillmore Simms was considered the best writer of American fiction by Edgar Allen Poe, Anne Ker was one of the first ranked women writers in the late 18th century, she died in poverty 1821. This title here by her was published first in 1817. Frederick Schiller has a short story in English and is probably a 1st edition. D. L. Haynes wrote this single title, firmly attributed to him. He married Mary Shelly, Percy's sister, (a Berkshire gentleman I believe).
