Jacob Coleman Hurewitz (November 11, 1914 May 16, 2008) was an American political scientist. Hurewitz graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 1936, then did his graduate work at Columbia, making what was then an unusual decision to concentrate on the Middle East. He worked for the Near East section of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, then worked successively at the State Department, as a political adviser on Palestine to the President's cabinet and for the United Nations secretariat. Professor Hurewitz began studying Middle Eastern politics in 1950, before the field had emerged as an academic discipline. From 1970 until 1984, Professor Hurewitz was director of the Columbia University's Middle East Institute, when he retired. In 1972, Hurewitz established the Columbia University Seminar on the Middle East, which he continued to chair until he was nearly 90. His publications influenced many other historians. For example, Wm. Roger Louis wrote in his book "The British Empire in the Middle East, 19451951" (Clarendon, 1984) that "my views on Arab nationalism and Zionism, and on the United States and the Middle East, have been influenced by the sensitive and dead-on-the-mark observations of J. C. Hurewitz." The Hoover Institution Archives hold his papers. The papers by Hurewitz's colleagues and former students correspond to the range in time and space of his own interests and studies: from Morocco to Iran and from the 17th century to the present day. The struggle for Palestine, needless to say, gets due attention. Among the contributors are Don Peretz, John Waterbury, Gary Sick, Lisa Anderson and Ann Mosely Lesch. Among the topics covered are Middle East, Jews, Arabs, North Africa, Egyptian-Israeli, Bedouin, Palestine, Mufti of Jerusalem, PLO, Terrorism, Immigration, Foreign Policy, Moshe Dayan, Democracy, Islam, Field Research, Technology Transfer, Economic Development, Ottoman Empire, Sinai, Negev, Passports, Demographic Patterns, Ottoman Military Conscription, Hebron, International Arbitration, Taba, Camp David Autonomy Plan, Mzali, Tunisia, Nasser, Turkish Iron and Steel Industry, Water Resources, Nile Basin, Sallee Rovers, Morocco, Corsairs, Lebanese Civil War, Jordan's Foreign Policy, British Naval Policy, United States Economic Assistance, and Peacekeeping. This is an increasingly scarce Festschrifft. In academia, a Festschrift is a book honoring a respected person, especially an academic, and presented during their lifetime. It generally takes the form of an edited volume, containing contributions from the honoree's colleagues, former pupils, and friends. Festschriften are often titled something like Essays in Honour of. Originating in Germany before World War I, this European tradition of honoring special achievements in science and culture was carried to the United States by scientists who escaped the Nazis. In the second half of the 20th century, the practice became used internationally. Since no English term for such a book to mark a special occasion had been in use, the German word Festschrift has been incorporated into English and is frequently used without the italics that designate a foreign term, although the capitalization of the first letter is usually retained from German. A Festschrift contains original contributions by the honored academic's close colleagues, often including their former doctoral students. It is typically published on the occasion of the honoree's retirement, significant birthday, or other notable career anniversary. The essays usually relate in some way to, or reflect upon, the honoree's contributions to their scholarly field, but can include important original research by the authors.
