Handsomely bound in finely woven white linen spine stamped brightly in gold; and in gray paper-covered boards. A near fine copy, crisp and tight, virtually unread. In a complete, near fine, crisp dust jacket with the price of $19.95 at the top of the inside front flap. The front panel features a photo of Jean Paul & Simone. A collectible copy, signed and dated with an inscription by D.D. Ryan to herself. This copy has been ostensibly inscribed in black flair ink by artist Victor Hugo: " Dorinda with warm inspiration, Love Victor 87" across the front endpaper to the late D.D. Ryan of Harper's Bazaar Fashion Fame. However, the inscription is actually written in D.D. Rya's own hand. Didi had a penchant for inscribing books given to her by such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Stephen Sondheim and others to herself as if they were presentations "from them," as in this case. D.D. Ryan (Dorinda Dixon Ryan), was a fashion designer at Harper's Bazaar where she worked with Diana Vreeland and Richard Avedon. Included in Dorinda's circle of friends were: Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Hilary Knight, Kay Thompson, and many others. D.D. was married to John Barry Ryan, III, and the couple is mentioned in Frewin's book "The Late Mrs. Dorothy Parker" on p.305 in a paragraph listing a gathering "of social notables." Simone de Beauvoir s account of the last ten years of Jean-Paul Sartre s life provides a focus for understanding one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century. But the book, consisting of both a year-by-year account of Sartre s last decade and a conversation between him and de Beauvoir about his life and work, is more than just a philosophical examination. It is also a personal dialogue of astonishing frankness that illuminates one of the most famous and complex relationships of the twentieth century. Stated "First American Edition"at the bottom of the copyright page.

First Franklin Library edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original full leather, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, gilt tooling to the front and rear panel, all edges gilt, raised bands, silk ribbon bookmark bound in. Signed by Simone de Beauvoir. Translated by H.M. Parshley. Illustrated by Eugene Karlin. In fine condition. In 1946, Simone de Beauvoir began to outline what she thought would be an autobiographical essay explaining why, when she had tried to define herself, the first sentence that came to mind was â I am a woman.â That October, my maiden aunt, Beauvoirâ s contemporary, came to visit me in the hospital nursery. I was a day old, and she found a little tag on my bassinet that announced, â Itâ s a Girl!â In the next bassinet was another newborn (â a lot punier,â she recalled), whose little tag announced, â Iâ m a Boy!â There we lay, innocent of a distinctionâ " between a female object and a male subjectâ " that would shape our destinies. It would also shape Beauvoirâ s great treatise on the subject. The Second Sex deals with the treatment of women throughout history and is regarded as a major work of feminist philosophy and the starting point of second-wave feminism. Literary scholar Camille Paglia praised The Second Sex, calling it "brilliant" and "the supreme work of modern feminism." Named by Modern Library as one of top 100 books of non- fiction of the twentieth century. Also named by The Times Literary Supplement as one of the most hundred influential books since World War II.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Signed U.S. First Edition in slipcase of the English translation of this Prix Goncourt awarding novel by one of the thought leaders of the 20th Century, Simone De Beauvoir. From a central place within the mid- 20th century world of French Existentialism, De Beauvoir laid essential intellectual groundwork for gender studies and feminism. In this novel of philosophers and intellectuals, De Beauvior draws on her experience of the exotic socializing within her bookish set -- storytelling that infuriated one famous lover, Nelson Algren, but taken in stride by more famous lover Jean-Paul Sartre. Signed by Simone De Beauvior on a limiitation page at front. 610 pages, cloth. The book itself shows no sign of previous use but has a hint of tanning on the spine. The slipcase has tanning about 1" deep on both sides of the open edge. The slipcase also has a pair of scuffs resulting in surface paper loss on one cover. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 3rd Edition. 8vo. Troisième édition. Red quarter morrocco, bound with both wrappers. | INSCRIBED: A Monsieur Kaplan toute ma symphatie. S de Beauvoir. | PROVENANCE: Harold Kaplan [1916-2015], American Literary Critic, author, poet and Northwestern University professor emeritus of English and American literature. | Kaplan was correspondent for the literary journal, Partisan Review, in post-war Paris. He lunched and dined with many of the central artists in Paris at the time and re- ferred to Sartre, Camus, and Beauvoir as the liveliest literary movement in France . During Arthur Koestler s first visit to France after the publication and huge success of his novel, «Darkness at Noon», in French translation, Kaplan is mentioned as part of the social circle on several occasions, often starting early morning with drinks going through the day ending up in polyglot conversations into the early hours. | In the novel «Le Sang des autres», written in Café de Flore in Paris between 1941-1945, Beaouvoir addressed the question of the relationship with the other as a direct historical and political problem, where commitment is central. Here, the plot takes place in the 1930s and during the German occupation, and the two main characters, Jean and Hélène, must choose a side. Whatever they do, they are going to be responsible for the suffering and death of others. The same question of responsibility arises in love relationships. The novel is also important for its description of an illegal abortion. One evening Albert Camus and his wife, Francine, gave a picnic dinner for Koestler and Mamaine. Everyone brought food and drink. Koestler, with his compulsive generosity, which could seem ostentatious, brought a cold roast chicken, a lobster and champagne for the others, and shrimps and clams for himself and Mamaine. They were accompanied by Mamaine s twin sister, Celia, and the American journalist Harold Kaplan. The other guests were Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Koestler, who had seen little of Sartre since the attack on his book in «Les Temps Modernes» the previous autumn, could not resist another skirmish. When Harold Kaplan left, Sartre attacked the American as anti-semitic and anti-negro and anti-liberty . Koestler was so furious that he let fly at Sartre and said who are you to talk about liberty, when for years you ve run a magazine which was communisant, and thus condoned the deportation of millions of people from the Baltic states? According to Mamaine Paget, Sartre was a bit taken aback by this, and as the atmosphere had anyway become intolerable we left. SOURCE: Antony Bevoor «Paris: After the Liberation 1944-1949», 1994. Signed limited edition and first English edition of the novel for which de Beauvoir won the Prix Goncourt, awarded to the best and most imaginative prose work. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Simone de Beauvoir. Fine in a near fine dust original glassine jacket in the original slipcase. Translated from the French by Leonard M. Friedman. Rare in this condition. In her most famous novel, The Mandarins, Simone de Beauvoir takes an unflinching look at Parisian intellectual society at the end of World War II. Hailed by Iris Murdoch as "a remarkable book, a novel on the grand scale, courageous in its exactitude and endearing because of its persistent seriousness." In fictionally relating the stories of those around her â Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Arthur Koestler, Nelson Algren â de Beauvoir dissects the emotional and philosophical currents of her time. At once an engrossing drama and an intriguing political tale, The Mandarins is the emotional odyssey of a woman torn between her inner desires and her public life. "Much more than a roman a clef . . . a moving and engrossing novel" (New York Times). It was the recipient of the Prix Goncourt Award.
