In den WarenkorbTrade Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Third Printing. 145 Pages. Interior text pages are flawless. Here Virgil Wyaco, a Zuni Indian elder and leader, recounts his life in both the traditional Zuni and modern Anglo worlds. As a boy, Wyaco learned Zuni ways from his family and the English language and vocational skills in Anglo schools. Earning a Bronze Star during World War II, he killed German soldiers in combat and participated in the executions of SS guards at Dachau. His postwar career included studies at the University of New Mexico, federal employment, marriage to a Cherokee woman, and family life in the suburbs. Later, Wyaco returned to Zuni as postmaster and married a traditional Zuni woman. His election to the Zuni tribal council in 1970 quickly established him as an influential leader. His varied career demonstrates the heartbreaks and rewards of a Native American life bridging two cultures in the 20th century.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD; J. B. Ford And Company= 'same date on title and verso with no later printings'). You can see the green covers in the photos. They are quite clean. There is one small area on the rear cover where the green is lightened. The gilt design on the front is nicely bright and unworn. Same goes for the lettering on the spine. There is some rippling of the cloth on the spine and rear cover, a few puffy spots on the front. The top edge of the spine has minor wear, some creasing. The bottom edge of the spine has a few speck-sized spots of rub-through and a slight bit of discoloration. There is a small dent just off the front middle edge. There is a bump/crease under both top corners. The cover edges are in quite solid shape. The top and middle ones are free of rubbing and not dulled. Same at the front bottom edge. On the rear bottom edge there is a little bit of lightening of the dark green, but no real rubbing. A little surprisingly, there's no rub-through at the corners. There is a little bit of crinkling due to the bumps. The spine has a moderate forward lean. The book is pretty solidly bound. I have scrolled through all the pages. There is one gathering of pages (241-253) where only the top binding or possibly two top bindings are intact. The inside covers and end papers are brown. The juncture between the front ones looks pretty good, a slight curling up of a tiny bit of the paper in a few places, very minor. The binding of the front cover is very solid. The juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper has a fairly thin space with some webbing revealed. However it's only cosmetic, the binding of the rear cover is very solid, no give when you pull at it from the side. The front end paper has a clean detachment over its top half, also 1/2 inch coming up from the bottom edge. There are two end papers at both the front and rear of the book. The pages are in pretty good shape. Scrolling through, I saw only a fairly light bit of what looks a little more like foxing than soiling. The pages do have toning, but it's uniform. The tissue guard between the frontispiece and title page has a good deal of foxing. On the frontispiece the illustration itself is free of foxing but the surrounding area has some. The title page is also affected by the foxing, although it looks more like toning there. The bump at the front top corner of the covers created a light reverberating crease below the top corners of a large number early pages. The one at the top corner of the rear cover did the same thing to a good number of the later pages. None of the corner creases reach the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. On one page, a previous owner penciled over two dates and penciled at the margin what he believed the correct dates were. There is no other writing, no names, to be found anywhere else in the book. A very good price, the lowest I've seen, for this 1868 first edition.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of Samuel Hartlib, a seventeenth-century polymath and advocate for social reform. The author explores Hartlib's diverse interests, from education and religious reform to the promotion of agriculture and scientific innovation. Hartlibââ â¢s life, a tapestry of intellectual pursuits, spanned the turbulent years of the English Civil War and the Commonwealth. His story is interwoven with the broader historical context of the period, encompassing the struggle for religious unity among Protestants, the burgeoning scientific revolution, and the rise of new educational ideals. The author delves into the complex network of relationships Hartlib cultivated with prominent figures such as John Dury, the champion of interdenominational peace, and the renowned educator Jan Amos Comenius. The book examines Hartlibââ â¢s vision for a more enlightened society, encompassing his proposals for educational reform, the establishment of a collegium charitatis, and the dissemination of knowledge through correspondence and publication. These endeavors, often undertaken without financial support, reflect the depth of Hartlib's commitment to improving the lives of his fellow humans. Ultimately, the book illuminates the extraordinary intellectual legacy of this influential figure and his enduring influence on the development of a more rational and enlightened society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

In den WarenkorbPrint. First Edition. George Gibbs traveled to northwestern California in 1851 on an expedition to negotiate treaties with Indian tribes along the rapidly developing Pacific Coast. He arrived in Humboldt County on September 9 and stayed several weeks. He sketched two canoes on Humboldt Bay, with the settlement called Humboldt (just north of present-day King Salmon) visible in the background. This scene was sketched by Gibbs, then redrawn by the artist Seth Eastman for inclusion in Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's Historical and Statistical Information Regarding the History, Conditions, and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1853]. First edition (first printing). Very good copy, with large margins, oblong format, 9.5 x 12.75 inches. Some foxing to margins. Settlement was called Humboldt City and was one of the earliest pioneer settlements on the bay.
