The back panel has light tanning and shelf wear soiling. The front panel has two 1 in. areas on the back ground's black color that are a little faded where stickers used to be. Very few English people have lived in Chiang Kai-shek's Formosa; for one thing they are not very welcome since Britain recognises Peking and not Taipei. But the author and his Malayan-Chinese wife did live there and he gives what he describes as a street-level biew of it. This is not a political book, but, inevitably, since the country is on a war footing, politics inpringe on everyday life. It is a picture of an island as it is seen today, drawn on the background of its history, where Taiwanese immigrants whose ancestors come from Fukien several centuries ago live side by side with the two millions refugees who have come from the mainland of China since the rise of Communism.
