Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 359 pages with diagrams and index. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. Every player has heard the saying, "Chess is 99 percent tactics." It isn't. It's 99 percent calculation. But until now there has never been a book devoted entirely to this most mysterious and essential chess technique. This book examines both the technical and practical aspects of how to think ahead -- the selection of candidate moves, the evaluation of end positions, finding the proper move order, and the like. Special attention is paid to the broad range of calculating mistakes, such as overlooked zwischenzugs and "quiet moves," visualization blunders, and "believing" your opponent. Condition: Light edge wear else very good to fine.

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 121 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. GM Soltis: "If white gets to attack in the Sicilian Defense anyway, why should he offer a pawn or two for the privilege? The answer is that black gets to counterplay in the Sicilian and his counterplay is usually as good as white's. That, in fact, is what makes the Sicilian popular. There are plenty of familiar Sicilian gambits(like the Smith Morra and Wing, which this book doesn't even cover). But in the last few years, a number of new ideas arising out of positional variations, have been discovered and found to pack a wallop for white". Here are six new white gambits against the Sicilian that the reader will have to attempt to destroy black! Condition: Light edge wear else near fine.

The material in this book is compiled from Soltis' "Chess to Enjoy" column in Chess Life. The chapters are a lively mixture of anecdote and analysis, and should entertain anyone with any level of interest in chess. Soltis knows his chess history, and tells some neat stories, such as the history of Capablanca's Composition. This is a problem composed by Capablanca in 1908, in which flaws were found after his death. The problem itself is fascinating, but Soltis makes a good story of the ups and downs of the subsequent analysis, and points out that chess fame still awaits anyone who can save the composition. Soltis is also good with anecdote and wit; my favourite section perhaps being the very tongue-in-cheek instructions on how to annotate a master game, e.g. suggesting safe adjectives: "positions are 'difficult,' 'winning,' 'critical,' 'hopeless,' or--the safest dodge of all--'shown in the diagram.'" Condition: Some creasing to front wrapper, corners bumped and rubbed, some soiling else about very good.
