VG in VG DJ. "The general concept of this novel came to my mind in 1936, when I was just leaving secondary school." This first part of this major work, is set at the outbreak of the First World War, and its moral concern is to establish the responsibility for Russia's defeat in the battle of Tannenberg. Limiting itself to the first two weeks of the war, the novel describes the Russian offensive into East Prussia, which resulted in the encirclement and defeat of Gen. Samsonov's 2nd Army by Hindenburg. This disaster revealed the dry rot at the core of Tsarism and hastened its downfall." Drawing of Solzhenitsyn by Karl W. Stuecklen on back of DJ. DJ price clipped and edge wear. Illustrated by Map on endpapers. 3rd ptg edition.

The first book in Solzhenitsyn's series of novels, whose grand theme is "the growing pains of modern Russia." In August 1914 the Russian Army, ill-equipped though greatly superior in numbers, in response to the call of the Allies in the West, advanced too rapidly into East Prussia and was destroyed by the Germans at Tannenberg. The book is in red cloth binding, firm and clean apart from top page edges which are browned and a little dust -freckled. The DJ has a little rubbing to the top edge and a short 1/4 inch split to top right hand corner of spine (closed from inside.) The lettering to the spine is lightly faded. Heavy book which will need further postage for destinations outside the UK.
