Internally very good and crisp, with the very odd mark; Strikingly featuring an early, crisp circular ink stamp to the front free end paper bearing the acronym 'AS?AP' without further inscription, suggesting a compelling provenance linked to an early research library collection—likely the historic Assembly of Scientific and Applied Psychologists (ASAP) or a related early psychical research society. Dr Alphonse Teste (1814-1888) was a prominent Parisian homeopath and physician whose work represents a critical developmental milestone in early psychology. Please see photos. A very scarce work by Alphonse Teste (1814-1888). Teste was a homeopath, mesmerist and doctor in France. This is one of several book he wrote on mesmerism also known as animal magnetism. Animal magnetism was a protoscientific theory developed by a Vienna-trained German doctor Franz Mesmer in the 18th century. Mesmer claimed that all living things, including humans, animals and vegetables posses this natural force. This force could have physical effects, including healing. Edgar Allen Poe wrote a book called The Philosophy of Animal Magnetism in 1837 on the offshoot topic. He made reference to mesmerism and used some of its ideas for Eureka. The book is firmly bound in the publisher's dark green cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, the extremities are bumped. The text block is age toned, slightly marked and foxed, with minor cracking at points, also small chips and short closed tears to the edges of roughly opened pages. From the library of notable parapsychologist and paranormal investigator, Alan Gauld (1932-2024), with his small bookplate to the front pastedown and neatly written name in ink to the endpaper opposite. Above Gauld's bookplate, providing intriguing further provenance, is the armorial bookplate of Edwin Richard Wyndham-Quin, 3rd Earl of Dunraven, styled Viscount Adare between 1824 and 1850, with the family motto: "Quae sursum volo videre", the father of Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, 4th Earl of Dunraven (1841-1926), also styled as Viscount Adare between 1850 and 1871, the soldier, journalist, sportsman and politician, who is perhaps best remembered now for his diaries which revealed an intimate erotically-charged 2-year relationship with the famous Victorian medium, Daniel Dunglas Home. Given the subject matter and the latter's subsequent interest in spiritualism it is highly likely that the young future Adare would have borrowed this book from his father's library. An authoritative treatise on mesmerism, its history, practice, limits and possibilities, with detailed descriptions of various cases in which Animal Magnetism was applied and its effects.
