Born in 1892, the Yorkshireman was the only man to captain England without previously playing county cricket. A wicket-keeper who played mainly for the Army, he unexpectedly led England on the 1927-28 South African tour, appearing in four Tests and earning praise as a capable captain and popular personality. He later played briefly for Yorkshire and toured the West Indies in 1929 before injury ended his playing career. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There is a neat gift inscription to the f.e.p. The unclipped dust wrapper has some mild edge wear but is still in fine condition. Lieutenant-Colonel Ronald Thomas "Rony" Stanyforth, CVO, MC (30 May 1892 - 20 February 1964) was an Army officer and English amateur first-class cricketer, who played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and England, captaining England in the four Test matches he played in. Stanyforth, a wicket-keeper, captained England against South Africa in 1927-28, and he won two, lost one and drew once. However, the series was a draw as the fifth Test, when Greville Stevens stood in for Stanyforth, was lost. Only three of Stanyforth's sixty one first-class games were played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in the County Championship, and all three came in 1928 after he had captained England. He also played for the Free Foresters from 1930 to 1933. Stanyforth served in the 21st Lancers, as Aide-de-camp to General Alan Brooke 1939-1940, and as GSO1 21st Army Group 1941-1945. Stanyforth died at Kirk Hammerton, Yorkshire, in February 1964, aged 72. He was a trustee of the MCC at the time of his death, and the author of Wicketkeeping, published in 1935. Ref XX 2.…

Featuring more than 200 spoons, with the earliest in the collection dating from 1488, EARLY ENGLISH SPOONS documents the famed Staniford English spoon collection. An unintentional artist's book or photobook, this elaborate album was produced in a "very small edition" (Report for the Year 1909-1917 on the Victoria and Albert Museum) and is now quite scarce. It is noteworthy not only for its breadth (including numerous apostle spoons), but for the inclusion of an extremely rare "death's head" spoon (1661). This specific spoon was profiled in Sam O'Brien's 2021 ATLAS OBSCURA article "The Macabre Mystery of a British Family's Skull-Topped Spoons." As he (and scholar David Constable in his book SILVER SPOONS OF BRITAIN: 1200-1710) note, these macabre spoons - though often thought of as memorial or funeral spoons - were in fact "likely a gift for a baby" to mark their birth, an unusual memento mori.
