Zustand: Very good. - Over 60 words penned on 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide buff paper. Misaddressing Jean Dalrymple as "Mr. Dalrymple" the pianist & composer invites her backstage to "talk business". "I shall be glad to see you after my programme on March 20th. If you will come backstage and give me the pleasure of meeting you." "You task is an exacting one, and I should imagine you find the ruthlessness of the bigger concerns somewhat challenging". Signed in full "Robert Stevenson". Folded for mailing with a paper clip stain at top left, there is offsetting along the left from a New York Times newspaper clipping about the concert titled "Stevenson plays own composition". Very good with the clipping. The pianist, composer and musicologist Robert Stevenson (1916-2012) studied under David Stanley Smith, Ernest Hutcheson, Howard Hanson and Stravinsky. He taught at the University of Texas and at the Westminster Choir College before becoming a faculty member at the University of California at Lost Angeles in 1949. Interested in Latin American music, he focused on rediscovering the music of New Spain, contributing to the historical record of Spanish, Portuguese and American music and also wrote extensively on African-American music. Stevenson was the founding editor of the "Inter-American Music Review".Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jose Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member, producer, and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
