Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. New and Revised Edition. The Observer's Book of Wild Animals - Observer's Book No. 5. Printer's code: 617.659 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Jun 1959. The book, which was the fifth of the series, was first published in 1938 as "British Wild Animals", and then revised by Maurice Burton in 1958 as "Wild Animals of the British Isles". There were eight different jacket designs. Describing 69 species with 72 illustrations, 46 of which are in full colour. ***Near fine in light-brown textured boards with black titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked. No creases or tears - just very light crease to the bottom edge of the front board near the spine. Corners sharp. No bumps. Text block edges nice and clean. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with no inscriptions or annotations. Printed on nice quality glossy paper. No marks. No creases. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net. The dustwrapper is complete without any loss, but there is some rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling. No chips or tears. No browning and no fading even to the titles on the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 224 pages including a four-page index at the back of the book. ***'This book for the pocket contains descriptions of 69 species of wild animals in Britain, and is profusely illustrated with 46 coloured plates and 26 half-tone illustrations, all of which, with one exception, are reproduced from photographs of living creatures taken in their natural surroundings. The text descriptions have been made as full as possible in a volume of this size, and the lives and habits of the creatures are clearly explained.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A first reprint of the 1958 revised edition, published in 1959, in beautiful collectable condition. Whilst the Observer's books from this period are not uncommon, many of the books were handled by children and consequently show a lot of wear and tear. They can prove to be quite hard to track down now in such near fine condition in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
