In plastic report covers. As best I can understand the author's thesis, this article and the accompanying illustrations attempt to estimate how little man truly knows, versus estimates of what he cannot hope to know. (as of 1899). These estimates had to do with man's knowledge of the vastness of space as well as the infinitely small molecular world.…

"How Thought Presents Itself Among the Phenomena of Nature", in Nature, vol 31 no. 806, 9 April 1885, with the paper on p. 529 in the full weekly issue of pp 525-548. This is the full weekly issue, cleanly extracted from a larger bound volume. Tidy, VG copy. $45. "George Johnstone Stoney FRS was an Irish physicist. He is most famous for introducing the term electron as the "fundamental unit quantity of electricity". He had introduced the concept, though not the word, as early as 1874, initially naming it "electrine", and the word itself came in 1891."--Wikipedia "In 1848 Stoney became assistant to the astronomer William Parsons Rosse, who secured for him a professorship in natural philosophy (natural science) at Queen's College, Galway (1852). In 1857 he became secretary of the Queen's University, Dublin. From his work on molecular physics and kinetic theory of gases, he estimated the number of molecules in a volume of gas under standard conditions. Though his method for estimating the value of the electronic charge was sound (1874), his result was incorrect because of an erroneous idea of the number of atoms in a gram of hydrogen. Stoney also proposed explanations for the escape of hydrogen and helium from the field of Earth's gravity and the absence of atmospheres on moons."--Britannica. …

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive guide to the electron theory, an essential concept in modern physics that explains electrical and magnetic phenomena. It traces the development of the theory from its origins to its culmination in the 20th century, highlighting key discoveries such as those made by Oersted, Faraday, and Hertz. The author provides a clear and accessible explanation of the electron's properties, such as its tiny mass and negative charge, and discusses how these properties govern its behavior in various situations. The book also explores the application of the electron theory in diverse fields, from vacuum tubes and gas discharges to the understanding of magnetism and the nature of matter. With its comprehensive approach and clear writing, this book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Three obituaries with lovely photo illustrations. The first two are published in "Obituary Notices of Fellows Deceased", part of the volume of 1912 for the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London pp I-XXXV, for Sir William Huggins and George Johnstone Stoney, both reports accompanied by lovely and detailed photogravure portraits of the men. The third example is a biography for Huggins, appearing in NATURE for 4 July 1901, a two page report accompanied by an excellent rotogravure of Huggins. This is an extract of four pages from the weekly issue, and is not complete, though the Huggins article is. Both are 9.5x7.5" or so.
