Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. East Rockaway is a village on the south shore of Nassau County, Long Island. In 1689, Joseph Haviland built a gristmill, which became the center of economic, social, and cultural life for the next century and a half, until the arrival of the railroad changed the focus of East Rockaway. Shipping waned, milling became obsolete, and new families arrived as East Rockaway entered the 20th century. A picturesque community, the village was incorporated in an effort by the village fathers to fight against unnecessary taxation. Today East Rockaway is a suburban community, with many of its residents employed locally, and it embraces its portrayal as a somnolent, quiet village. Patricia C. Sympson, Ph.D., is a retired educator and secretary of the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook. The treasure trove of pictures and information in East Rockaway has been gathered from the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook and from many residents, past and present, who maintain a love of their community. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all. Book jacket. East Rockaway is a village on the south shore of Nassau County, Long Island.
