Zustand: new. (Hardcover, 1981). (1951) 1981 2nd edition revised. 4to (190 x 252mm). Ppii,176. B/w plates and illustrations, bibliography. Olive end-papers, green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Slightly stained and musty but a new unread copy in dust-wrapper. "In 1951, when first published, this book achieved wide recognition as the standard, indeed the only work devoted to the roe and its stalking. Despite the passage of years, Henry Tegner's originality of thought and far sighted approach still remain fresh and true. It is particularly fitting that one of Henry Tegner's staunchest disciples Richard Prior, himself a world authority on roe stalking, should have consented to revise and bring the text up to date." (Hardcover, 1971 ). 1971 1st edition. 8vo (141 x 216mm). Pp128. B/w photographs, folding map at rear. Pink boards, gilt titles to spine. Good-plus in used dust-wrapper. "Henry Tegner first fell in love with the country around the river Spey many years ago, when he was apprenticed to a firm of engineers in Aberdeen. A keen naturalist, he explored far into the remote glens, studying the flora and fauna with which this beautiful area abounds, and since then he has visited Speyside every year. His book is at once a guide to the region and an account of memorable outings observing wildlife. He has watched golden eagles, red deer and roedeer, foxes, hares, wild cats, and the famous ospreys now nesting there. He also recounts many tales derived from past naturalists who have spent their lives on Speyside, charmed, as he has been, by its ever changing magic. A final chapter is devoted to the Highland Folk Museum at Kingussie where an invaluable collection preserves examples of old Highland dwellings, together with domestic furniture and utensils, hunting equipment, and specimens of the plants from which dyes were obtained for the clan tartans." .

A new unread copy from a stock of books which has been in store for almost forty years. A good natural history of the hare, with excursions into sport and history. Their overall population in Britain may fluctuate very appreciably from one year to another, but we do not really know as yet just how or why. Does a severe winter reduce the hare population in a marked manner? Or is it some kind of disease which thins down their number? These things we have still to learn." Few people are better qualified to write about the Border country and the ways and habits of its wild life; and Mr. Tegner writes with an impressive vividness, whether dealing with personal experiences of Foxes of Poachers, Roe Deer or Black Grouse, or the exigencies of an otter hunt. Little more need be said, except that the handsome production of this book for country-lovers is greatly enhanced by its very fine illustrations, from the pen of an artist whose work is famous for its power to capture the spirit of an outdoor scene, D.J. Watkins-Pitchford." .
