Every episode receives its own account, including a synopsis, production information and behind-the-scenes commentary from the writers, producers, directors, designers and actors responsible. If you have ever wondered why a story developed in a particular direction?or whose week was ruined by the requirement for another fleet of Dominion ships?there is a fair chance the answer is here. Unlike the wandering starships of earlier Star Trek , Deep Space Nine remained largely in one place. This sounded cheaper and more restful until the writers introduced a wormhole, a strategically vital planet, competing religions, several hostile governments and the largest war in Federation history. The station did not boldly go anywhere; the entire Alpha Quadrant brought its problems to reception. The book charts the development of Benjamin Sisko from reluctant station commander to captain, wartime leader and religious Emissary. It follows Kira Nerys as she adjusts from resistance fighter to administrator, Odo as he investigates both crime and his own origins, and Jadzia Dax as she carries several lifetimes of memories while still finding time to play tongo. Dr Bashir matures, Chief O?Brien suffers with legendary regularity, and Worf eventually arrives to increase the station?s supply of Klingon solemnity. Then there is Quark, proprietor of the bar and guardian of Ferengi economic principles, who spends seven seasons demonstrating that capitalism will survive into the 24th century provided somebody remembers to charge admission. His brother Rom develops unexpected talents, Nog becomes the first Ferengi in Starfleet, and Grand Nagus Zek ensures that every major social reform is accompanied by an appropriate commercial opportunity. Particularly valuable is the coverage of the series? evolving storylines. Deep Space Nine increasingly embraced continuing plots, moral ambiguity and consequences that did not obligingly disappear before the closing credits. It is useful both for devoted fans and for anyone conducting the specialised scholarly activity known as trying to remember which Weyoun was killed by Worf and which one merely had an unpleasant meeting with him. Interviews and production recollections reveal the personalities behind the programme and the debates that shaped it. The writers discuss difficult episodes, abandoned ideas and the risks involved in taking Star Trek into darker territory. The actors explain how their characters changed beneath several seasons of uniforms, prosthetics and dialogue concerning subspace phenomena. Even apparently effortless television, it turns out, requires an exhausting amount of effort. The book makes clear why Deep Space Nine developed such a distinctive identity. It retained the optimism of Star Trek while testing it against war, faith, terrorism, occupation and political compromise. The Federation?s ideals remained important, but they were no longer protected by a weekly departure at warp speed. It is detailed enough to settle minor disputes, though experience suggests that no reference book has ever permanently settled a dispute between Star Trek fans.
