Das eine wie das andere ist der Ausfluß davon, daß vor allem mein Bestreben war eine wirkliche Geschichte der römischen Literatur zu geben, eine Darstellung ihrer Erscheinungsweisen während der Jahrhunderte ihres Daseins. Von diesem leitenden Gesichtspunkt aus mußte es als ganz unmöglich erscheinen, die christliche Literatur auszuschließen oder auch nur zu verkürzen; denn vom Ende des zweiten Jahrh. n. Chr. an ist sie nun einmal ein Bestandteil der römischen Literatur, und zwar einer von immer zunehmender Wichtigkeit. Sie trotzdem hintanzusetzen wäre nur dann zulässig, wenn man sich überhaupt, mit Weglassung aller technischen Fächer, auf die sog. schöne Literatur beschränken wollte. Behandelt man aber die Literatur der Jurisprudenz, Naturwissenschaften u.s. f., so darf man auch gegen die der Theologie sich nicht verschließen. Abhalten könnte davon nur etwa ihr großer Umfang. Aber es versteht sich daß sie Gegenstand der Literaturgeschichte nur in der Ausdehnung werden kann, in der es auch die übrigen technischen Fächer sind; und was die Art ihrer Behandlung betrifft, so war mein Bemühen sie mit historischem Sinne anzufassen, also ohne Einmischung in die dogmatischen Zänkereien, aber auch ohne Geringschätzung. - Wilhelm Siegmund von Teuffel (* 27.
