Working copies belonging to actor Wesley Lau, with pencil annotations of Lau's name and the plays' titles on the front wrapper, and manuscript marker annotations of "W. Lau" on the top l…eft of the title page as well as listed in the annotations of actors' names adjacent to the character list on the title page, with manuscript pencil and marker annotations throughout all three by Lau. The working copy of the three plays found here are all from July 1948 Beloit College (Beloit, Wisconsin) performances of the three plays, which Lau, while on summer vacation from Yale Drama School, performed in during the college's summer theatre workshop. Lau played the lead, Claude Griffiths, in Erwin Piscator and Lena Goldschmidt's 1932 adaptation of the the 1925 Theodore Dreiser novel, Theseus in Euripide's "Hippolytus," and Plagiary in the 1779 satire "The Critic" by Richard Brinsley Sheridan (noted as "acting version" by Beloit College theatre director and designer Kirk Denmark). Beloit's 1948 summer season, including the "successful" production of "An American Tragedy" and upcoming performances including "Hippolytus" and "The Critic," were the subject of a July 13, 1948 article, "Janesville Student has Role in Next Beloit College Play," in the Janesville Daily Gazette, which notes that director Denmark was assisted in the productions by "Wesley Lau of Yale University." Noted character actor, Wesley Lau received a Masters of Arts degree from Yale Drama School and studied at The Actors Studio in New York with the intention of becoming a playwright, having taken up acting only after finding more work as an actor than a playwright. Lau is best known for his 81 performances as Lt. Andy Anderson in the 1957-1966 CBS television series "Perry Mason," but made memorable appearances in numerous television series including, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1958-1959), "Peter Gunn" (1959-1960), "Gunsmoke" (1959-1960), "Bonanza" (1960 and 1966), "The Twilight Zone" (1961-1962), "The Big Valley" (1965), "Mission: Impossible" (1969-1972), and "The Six Million Dollar Man" (1975), among many others, as well as appearing in the films "The Alamo" (1960), "The Venetian Affair" (1967), and "Panic in the City" (1968). In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore J. "Dutch." Signed photograph of the Enola Gay, documenting the B 29 Superfortress used in the first atomic bombing in warfare and bearing an inscription by its navigator. Van Kirk served as navigator aboard the B 29 Enola Gay during the August 6, 1945 bombing of Hiroshima, guiding the aircraft during its flig…ht from Tinian to Japan and its return. The image supports research into World War II aviation, the Manhattan Project, atomic warfare, and the commemorative culture through which mission participants later identified and interpreted the aircraft. The National WWII Museum confirms Van Kirk's position as navigator aboard the Enola Gay. Color photographic image of the Enola Gay, undated. 6 by 12 inches. The aircraft is the primary subject, although its viewpoint, setting, markings, and whether it is shown in flight or on the ground are not specified in the supplied description. Van Kirk has inscribed the photograph in blue ink: "To [recipient] - best wishes and thanks - Dutch Van Kirk, Navigator - Enola Gay Gang, 6 Aug. 1945." The personalized salutation and informal phrase "Enola Gay Gang" identify the photograph as a later commemorative presentation rather than a contemporaneously inscribed wartime image. On August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay departed Tinian carrying the uranium bomb known as "Little Boy" and released it over Hiroshima, initiating the use of nuclear weapons in war. The aircraft and its crew subsequently became central to competing historical interpretations of military necessity, civilian destruction, technological change, and the beginning of the atomic age. Van Kirk's full mission inscription connects the pictured aircraft directly to the navigator responsible for plotting its course and records the date through the language of a surviving participant. Blue-ink inscription remains bold and legible; no defects are reported. Near fine. A personally inscribed aircraft portrait joining the material history of the Enola Gay with the later commemoration of the Hiroshima mission. Signed.

In den WarenkorbUnited States Department of State. The International Control of Atomic Energy: Scientific Information Transmitted to the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission June 14, 1946 - October 14, 1946, 1946, constitutes one of the earliest formal U.S. government submissions to the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission outlining propo…sed mechanisms to regulate nuclear weapons following the atomic bombings of Japan. Issued in the immediate aftermath of World War II and within one year of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, the report presents a technical and policy framework focused on controlling fissile materials as the primary safeguard against proliferation. This copy bears a direct inscription by Theodore Van Kirk, navigator of the Enola Gay on August 6, 1945, linking the theoretical policy proposals of international governance with firsthand participation in the first operational use of atomic weapons. Van Kirk underscores a central conclusion of the report by writing: "As stated on p. 164, The best control measure for the prevention of atomic bomb manufacture are those intended to prevent the accumulation of the essential fissionable materials," followed by his identification: "Theodore Van Kirk - Navigator - Enola Gay 6 Aug. 1945." United States Department of State. The International Control of Atomic Energy: Scientific Information Transmitted to the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission June 14, 1946 - October 14, 1946. Washington, D.C.: Department of State, 1946. Softcover volume measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches, 195 pages. The work compiles scientific data, policy recommendations, and diplomatic proposals submitted to the United Nations concerning the international management of atomic energy and the prevention of nuclear weapons development. The inscription appears on the title page in Van Kirk's hand, directly referencing a specific passage within the text and reinforcing its central argument regarding material control. Produced during the earliest phase of postwar nuclear diplomacy, the report aligns with U.S. efforts to establish international oversight of atomic energy before the escalation of Cold War arms competition. The presence of Van Kirk's annotation situates the document within both policy formation and military execution, bridging governmental attempts at regulation with the lived experience of atomic warfare. Light wear to covers with minor handling; internally clean; inscription clear and legible. Overall very good condition.

In den Warenkorbdj. Hecht, Selig. Explaining the Atom, signed and inscribed by Theodore Van Kirk, framing the atomic bombing of Hiroshima within a longer intellectual history of atomic theory and modern physics. As navigator of the Enola Gay during the August 6, 1945 mission, Van Kirk contributed directly to the operational execution of nuclear… warfare, and his inscription frames that event as the culmination of developments beginning with ancient atomism and extending through 20th-century scientific breakthroughs. By referencing figures such as Democritus and Einstein alongside the Manhattan Project, the inscription integrates scientific theory with wartime application, offering a condensed narrative linking philosophical origins of atomic thought to its realization in military technology. Hecht, Selig. Explaining the Atom. New York: Viking Press, 1947. 205 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Signed and extensively inscribed on the inside title page by Theodore Van Kirk. The inscription reads: "'Page 9; In 400 B.C., Deocritus theoryed the existence of atoms. In 1905 Einstein theorized E=MC squared. In 1943 Oppenheimer heads the Manhattan Project. In 1945 our 'Enola Gay' crew drops the atomic bomb on Hiroshima - Theodore 'Dutch' Van Kirk Navigator - Enola Gay August 6, 1945." The text presents a chronological sequence of scientific and historical developments, culminating in Van Kirk's own role in the Hiroshima mission. Published in the immediate postwar period, Explaining the Atom aimed to make atomic science accessible to a broad audience at a time when nuclear technology had reshaped global politics and warfare. Van Kirk's inscription reflects how participants in the atomic mission interpreted their actions within a broader scientific and historical continuum, linking abstract theory to its most consequential application. The juxtaposition of popular scientific exposition with firsthand annotation from a mission participant offers a layered artifact for the study of nuclear history, scientific communication, and the integration of intellectual and military developments in the mid-20th century. Dust jacket shows moderate wear; volume itself remains clean and well-preserved with strong, legible inscription. Overall very good. Signed.

In den Warenkorbdj. Marx, Joseph L. Seven Hours to Zero. 1967 account of the planning and execution of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima containing a signed annotation by Theodore J. "Dutch" Van Kirk, navigator of the B 29 bomber Enola Gay. The book addresses the events leading to the United States' use of atomic weapons against Japan on August 6…, 1945, the mission that introduced nuclear warfare into modern military history and contributed directly to the end of the Second World War in the Pacific. Van Kirk, one of the three principal crew members aboard the aircraft that delivered the uranium bomb over Hiroshima, inscribed the title page with a critical assessment of the narrative: "A generally good account of our mission to drop the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. There are a few historical discrepancies as memories fade after the fact. Theodore J 'Dutch' Van Kirk Navigator Enola Gay August 6, 1945." The inscription provides a firsthand comment by a participant whose navigational calculations guided the aircraft to its target during the mission. Marx, Joseph L. Seven Hours to Zero. New York: Putnam, 1967. Signed commentary by Theodore J. "Dutch" Van Kirk on the title page. Hardback with dust jacket. The volume presents a narrative reconstruction of the hours leading to the Hiroshima bombing and the military planning undertaken by the United States Army Air Forces during the closing phase of the Pacific War. Van Kirk's handwritten note identifies his role as navigator of the Enola Gay and directly addresses the historical accuracy of the work. The Hiroshima mission represented a turning point in twentieth century military and political history, demonstrating the destructive capacity of nuclear weapons and initiating the nuclear age that shaped Cold War international relations. Theodore J. "Dutch" Van Kirk served as navigator under pilot Paul W. Tibbets and bombardier Thomas Ferebee during the mission, determining the flight path that brought the aircraft over Hiroshima on the morning of August 6, 1945. Inscribed copies of historical works by individuals directly involved in the atomic bombing provide documentary testimony from participants whose recollections and interpretations continue to influence debates over nuclear warfare, military decision making, and the closing stages of the Second World War. Light handling wear to dust jacket and boards consistent with age. Overall condition very good. Signed.

In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore "Dutch." Signed poster reproducing the navigator's log of the Enola Gay mission to Hiroshima, documenting the flight chronology of the first atomic bombing used in warfare on August 6, 1945. Van Kirk served as navigator aboard the B-29 commanded by Paul Tibbets and recorded the aircraft's route from Tinian Isl…and to Japan and its return to base. By presenting successive navigational entries-including the notation "BOMB AWAY"-the poster provides a reproduced documentary account of the mission that initiated the nuclear age and supports research into World War II aviation, the Manhattan Project, atomic warfare, and the continuing historical and ethical study of Hiroshima. The National WWII Museum identifies Van Kirk as the Enola Gay's navigator and preserves his oral testimony concerning the mission. Flight Log of the Enola Gay, Atomic Bomb Mission to Hiroshima. Signed by Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk. Publisher, place, date, and dimensions not specified. The poster reproduces three pages of navigational-log entries progressing from takeoff through the aircraft's return to Tinian. Recorded events include the B-29's departure at 0245 Tinian time, navigation toward Iwo Jima and the Japanese home islands, and "BOMB AWAY" at 0915, corresponding to 0815 in Hiroshima. The Nuclear Museum records the surviving log as beginning shortly after the 0245 takeoff and concluding with the aircraft's landing at 1458, with all entries given in Tinian time. Van Kirk signed the poster in full in blue ink. The supplied description states that the reproduced pages were handwritten by Van Kirk, but the poster itself should be distinguished clearly from the original August 6, 1945 navigational log. The original log was offered by Heritage Auction Galleries in October 2007 with an estimate of $350,000 to $400,000 and realized $358,500. Heritage described it as the log retained by Van Kirk after the mission and consigned directly by him, while the present object is a later commemorative reproduction carrying his autograph. Its sequence of times and positions makes the poster a concise visual record of the operational stages through which the mission proceeded, while Van Kirk's signature connects the reproduction directly to the airman responsible for navigation. Blue-ink signature and reproduced log images remain clear; no defects are reported. Near fine. A signed commemorative document presenting the flight chronology of the Enola Gay through the recorded observations of its navigator. Signed.

In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore "Dutch." Signed poster reproducing the navigator's log of the August 6, 1945, Enola Gay mission documents the flight that delivered the first atomic bomb used in warfare. Van Kirk served as navigator aboard the B-29, plotting the aircraft's course from North Field on Tinian to Hiroshima and back during a missi…on that initiated the wartime use of nuclear weapons and transformed military strategy, international relations, and public understanding of technological destruction. The National Museum of the United States Air Force records that the Enola Gay departed at 2:45 a.m. and released the uranium bomb known as "Little Boy" over Hiroshima later that morning. The poster provides a signed visual chronology for the study of World War II aviation, operational navigation, the Manhattan Project, and the beginning of the nuclear age. Hiroshima Mission Navigator's Log of the Enola Gay. Issuer, place, and date of printing not identified. Poster reproducing three manuscript pages entirely in Van Kirk's hand; dimensions not supplied. The successive entries trace the mission from takeoff through navigation toward Japan, the bombing run, and the aircraft's return to base. The log records the 0245 departure, the turn onto a 345-degree heading, and the climb to 30,800 feet, with "BOMB AWAY" entered at 0915. These operational notations reduce the mission to headings, altitudes, times, and navigational actions, preserving the procedural language by which the crew recorded an event of extraordinary human consequence. Signed at the bottom, "Theodore J. 'Dutch' Van Kirk, Navigator-Enola Gay, Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945." Because the three manuscript pages are photographically or mechanically reproduced, the poster should not be described as Van Kirk's original wartime log; only the concluding inscription and signature are represented as original autograph material. The Enola Gay's release of "Little Boy" over Hiroshima marked the first use of a nuclear weapon in war; the bomb detonated approximately 1,800 feet above the city. The reproduced entries offer an operational perspective distinct from later narrative accounts, showing how the navigator organized the mission through timed observations and course calculations while leaving the destruction below largely outside the log's technical vocabulary. No creasing, staining, fading, tears, or edge losses are identified; reproduced manuscript images and Van Kirk's signed inscription remain clear, near fine. Signed commemorative record joining the navigator's minute-by-minute flight chronology with direct identification by the last surviving member of the Enola Gay crew. Signed.

In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore J. "Dutch." Inscribed August 7, 1945 issue of The Cleveland Press documenting the first full day of American newspaper reporting on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and bearing the identification of the airman who navigated the aircraft that delivered the weapon. Van Kirk served as navigator aboard the B 29 Eno…la Gay during the August 6, 1945 bombing of Hiroshima, and his later inscription connects a contemporary public account of the attack with a direct participant in the mission. The issue provides primary-source evidence for the study of World War II journalism, public introduction to atomic warfare, military memory, and the language through which unprecedented destruction was initially communicated before casualty figures and long-term effects were widely understood. The Cleveland Press. Cleveland, Ohio. August 7, 1945. 12 pages. The principal headline reads, "ATOM BOMB SHATTERS JAP TARGET," followed by "Foe Reports Huge Loss at Hiroshima." The front page also contains a large photograph of United States troops and a map locating Japan, situating the new weapon within continuing Pacific combat operations. In the upper margin, Van Kirk has written in pencil, "Theodore J. 'Dutch' Van Kirk - Navigator - Enola Gay - Hiroshima 6 Aug 1945." The newspaper appeared the day after the bombing and after President Harry S. Truman publicly announced that an atomic bomb had been used against Hiroshima, making issues dated August 7 among the earliest newspapers through which many Americans encountered detailed reporting about the weapon and its target. The issue predates the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9 and Japan's decision to surrender. Truman announced Japan's acceptance of surrender terms on August 14, while Emperor Hirohito addressed the Japanese public on August 15; the formal surrender followed aboard the USS Missouri on September 2. Its urgent headline and limited information preserve the uncertainty of the intervening period, when the atomic bomb had been revealed but the Pacific War had not yet ended. Separation along the front-page fold, with several small areas of paper loss at the fold, each approximately dime-sized or smaller; the losses are concentrated near the center and would be obscured if the upper half were displayed separately. Remaining pages and Van Kirk's pencil inscription are present and legible. Very good. A contemporary newspaper record of the opening of the atomic age, strengthened by the full identifying inscription of the Enola Gay's navigator. Signed.

In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore J. "Atomic Bomb Explosion Over Hiroshima," signed statement recounting the August 6, 1945 atomic bombing mission, documents direct eyewitness testimony from the navigator of the Enola Gay, the aircraft that delivered the first atomic bomb used in warfare. The document supports research into World War II air op…erations, atomic warfare, and firsthand participant narratives of the Hiroshima mission. As navigator, Van Kirk occupied a central operational role in the execution of the flight, and his account provides detailed observational evidence of the bombing sequence, targeting, and immediate visual aftermath. Van Kirk, Theodore J. Signed statement titled "Atomic Bomb Explosion Over Hiroshima." 1 page. The typed document includes handwritten corrections and additions in blue ink by Van Kirk, including the insertion "Over Hiroshima" in the title. The narrative records precise operational timing and targeting details, stating: "Our plane was over Hiroshima at 0815 hours. The bomb fell away from the aircraft at 0915:17 Tinian time. It hit right on target on the Aioi Bridge in Hiroshima." Van Kirk further describes the visual effects immediately following detonation: "The first thing we saw was a big white cloud. It was probably 40,000 feet already and around the base of that cloud the entire city of Hiroshima was covered with smoke and dust and you couldn't observe a thing down there." The statement also includes reflective commentary on the mission's intended strategic purpose, noting pilot Paul Tibbets' assertion that the weapon could "shorten or end the war." Signed in full "Theodore J 'Dutch' Van Kirk." The document originates from one of the most consequential military actions of the twentieth century, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, which marked the introduction of nuclear weapons into warfare and directly preceded Japan's surrender. As a participant-generated account, it offers primary evidence of crew understanding, mission execution, and immediate perception of the bomb's effects, complementing official military records and later historical analyses. The inclusion of precise times, named targets, and observational detail enhances its value for reconstructing the operational chronology of the mission. Light handling wear; otherwise well-preserved with clear text and signature. Overall very good condition. Signed.

In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore J. signed and inscribed photograph of the Hiroshima Atomic Dome, created post-1945, represents a direct visual and textual reflection by the navigator of the B-29 Enola Gay on the devastation wrought by the first atomic bomb used in warfare. Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk (1921-2014), responsible for navigation dur…ing the 6 August 1945 mission from Tinian, here annotates an image of the ruined cityscape, transforming a documentary photograph into a vehicle for personal recollection and justification. The item supports research into World War II memory culture, strategic bombing doctrine, and the ways in which atomic bomb participants publicly framed civilian casualties and the ethics of total war in subsequent decades. Van Kirk, Theodore J. Inscribed photograph. 8 ½ x 11 inches. Black-and-white photograph depicting the Hiroshima Atomic Dome standing amid surrounding devastation, the skeletal structure isolated against a flattened urban landscape. In ink, Van Kirk writes: "I remember after the explosion, the airplane was hit with a big jolt, It was not flak but the shock wave effect of an atomic explosion. 60% of the city had been instantly destroyed. The number of killed and missing was 80,000. Unfortunately in modern warfare you cannot separate civilian and military targets. - Theodore J. 'Dutch' Van Kirk, Navigator - Enola Gay, 6 August 1945." The inscription combines operational memory-the shock wave striking the aircraft-with statistical casualty figures and a broader statement about the nature of twentieth-century warfare. Signed within the text. Produced decades after the event and dated to the day of the mission, the photograph reflects the enduring historical reckoning with Hiroshima's destruction and the moral arguments advanced by those who carried out the bombing. Van Kirk's juxtaposition of physical sensation in the aircraft with quantified urban devastation links technical execution to human consequence, while his statement regarding the inseparability of civilian and military targets situates the image within debates over strategic bombing and nuclear ethics. Minor surface wear and light handling marks; image clear with strong tonal contrast; inscription bold and fully legible. Overall very good to near fine condition. A significant inscribed image uniting one of the most recognizable architectural remnants of Hiroshima with a candid reflection by a principal participant in the first atomic bombing mission. Signed.

In den WarenkorbVan Kirk, Theodore J. handwritten autograph letter signed, 6 August 1945, provides a first-person account by the navigator of the B-29 Enola Gay addressing fears of blast damage and radiation exposure during the Hiroshima atomic bombing mission. As navigator on the aircraft that delivered the first deployed atomic weapon in warf…are, Van Kirk (1921-2014) occupied a critical operational role requiring precise calculations of speed, altitude, and distance to ensure both mission success and crew survival. This manuscript directly supports research into World War II strategic bombing, the operational realities of the Manhattan Project, and contemporary military understanding of radiation hazards at the moment nuclear weapons entered combat. His reflections reveal not only technical planning but also the limited scientific certainty conveyed to flight crews regarding the bomb's destructive and radiological effects. Van Kirk, Theodore J. 6 August 1945. Two pages. Approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. In this holograph letter written in question-and-answer format, Van Kirk addresses the risks anticipated by the crew: "Did you have any fears about the effects the atomic bomb would have on the Enola Gay and the crew? Yes. The fact that the bombs shock waves might destroy or damage the airplane was a major concern." He recalls being advised by a scientist that "we think the airplane will be OK, if you're 9 miles away when the bomb explodes," and explains that "it was to get speed and altitude - and therefore distance - that we stripped down our airplanes. We were 12 miles away when the bomb exploded." Regarding radiation, he writes: "We were not greatly concerned. We were told that the mushroom shaped cloud was deadly radiation and to stay clear of it. Otherwise no equipment to protect from radiation. No crew members were affected." He signs, "Sincerely / Theodore J 'Dutch' Van Kirk / Navigator - Enola Gay / 6 Aug. 1945." The manuscript preserves his phrasing, underscoring the mixture of scientific briefing, operational adaptation, and residual uncertainty that characterized the mission. Composed retrospectively and dated to the day of the bombing, the letter reflects how participants later articulated their understanding of radiation at a time when its long-term biological effects were not yet fully grasped by the broader public or, as Van Kirk's statement suggests, by operational crews. His emphasis on distance calculations and aircraft modification illustrates the intersection of scientific theory and practical military execution in August 1945, when strategic air power entered the nuclear age. The acknowledgment that no protective equipment was provided and that crews relied primarily on avoidance of the mushroom cloud contributes to the evidentiary record of early nuclear risk assessment within the U.S. Army Air Forces. Minor edge wear and light handling creases; ink strong and fully legible; paper clean. Overall very good to near fine condition. A substantive, self-authored reflection on blast mechanics and radiation awareness at the inception of atomic warfare. Signed.
