12mo., 239, [1]; 250pp., & [4] page neat manuscript "Table" tipped-in between p. 250 and integral final blank, in contemporary full sprinkled calf, real raised bands, full gilt stamped decorations in the panels, original dark red leather label, some wear on the top and bottom of the spine and on the board edges, red speckled edg…es, very good to fine copy (ds1). Tchemerzine V:866. Graesse VI-2, p.122. Brunet V: 795. (Brunet states that this edition was one of the most sought after editions of Theophile de Viau's works). This French poet (1591-1626) was the acknowledged leader of a group of Parisian "libertines"; he was a Huguenot and a freethinker and made good use of his sharp wit in writing about the Church and the government. He wrote and produced his work on "Pyramus and Thisbe" around 1623 and wrote several satirical pieces as well as poetry. He was banished from Paris several times on grounds of blasphemy, indecency, etc. yet managed always to return, usually under the protection of the Duc de Montmorency and, in fact, died in Paris.

[The Satyrique Parnassus of Mr The?ophile Esquire. Followed by a New Satyrique Parnassus. The Edition Revised upon all the Editions Of the XVIIth Century, Corrected and Annotated]. Small8vos.,volume1: half-title,title,[1p.],ii-iv, 230pp. Volume 2: half-title, title with bound in tissue guard, [1p.], 245pp., [1p.]. Titles printed… in black and red, fleurons in red as satyrs with fig leaves. Rebound into possibly contemporary, unsigned, half red morocco and marbled paper covered boards, top edges gilt, untrimmed, integral silk bookmarks, 2ll. blanks apiece in fronts and backs, marbled endpapers, ruled borders, 6 compartments, 5 raised bands, gilt fillets, decorations and titles in gilt, French text. The first volume, with a loose bifolium of possibly contemporary holograph notes in a neat hand in purple and red ink on ruled paper with a central horizontal fold, and a loose auctioneer's slip. N.p. [Brussels], n.p. [Poulet Malassis], L'An LCCCLXIV, [1864]. £500.00 A crisp set, the binding a trifle rubbed and chipped, bookmark lost in one volume, spots and faded stain on the lower edge of a hand- ful of pages not affecting text. Lacks Fe?licien Rops' famous frontispiece. Vicaire VI, 416. Provenance: the very scholarly holograph notes identify the authors and make a concordance of names and spellings of words. Suggest- ing, one might speculate, one of the great erotic bibliographers who was in the habit of using purple ink. From the collections of Jean-Pierre Faur and Emmanuel Pierrat A clandestinely published collection of licentious and bawdy writings derived from an infamous seventeenth-century work of anonymous, semi-anonymous and openly acknowledged contributions. The first item is a a blasphemous sonnet by Viau that praises homosexuality and sodomy in a parody of a prayer. All still very shocking in late nineteenth century Europe Romande. The clandestine printing is thought to be easily identified by the satyr on the title page as by Poulet Malassis. 243568.
