Full dark brown leather binding contemporary to publication; light rubbing to boards; five raised bands to spine; boards and spine decorated with black and…gilt stamping; gilt tooled board edges and inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Some soiling to dark yellow endpapers; past owner's neatly written ink inscription "Presented to the | Pawlet M.E. Church, | By | Mrs. Parker Jones. | March, 1870" on front free endpaper; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A handsome book - unfortunately no bookbindery ticket present but presentation/gift style binding certainly reflects work of a top-tier New York or Boston binder. Text comprised of introductory "Address to the Member and Friends of the Methodist Episcopal Church" (pages 3-5) followed by 1148 hymns (song lyrics only, i.e. no musical scores) on pages 7-684; "Index of First Lines" (pages 685-706); "Index of Subjects" (pages 707-718); "Index of Texts" (pages 719-726); "Index of Verses" (pages 727-744). Book was acquired from a Tuscaloosa, Alabama estate but the only community named "Pawlet" in the United States is in Rutland County, Vermont; online records for Mettawee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet cite interrees Parker Jones (1821-1868) and wife Julia Clara Andrus Jones (1834-1900) which more-or-less affirms the Vermont connection.
