He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909; the fact that he never won is a major controversy. Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, Tolstoy's notable works include the novels "War and Peace" (1869) and "Anna Karenina" (1878), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, "Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth" (1852-1856), and "Sevastopol Sketches" (1855), based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. His fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" (1886), "Family Happiness" (1859), "After the Ball" (1911), and "Hadji Murad" (1912). He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. "What to Do" - Thoughts Evoked by the Census of Moscow" was first published in Russian in 1887.' In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: As New. First separate American edition. Tan stapled wrappers with black lettering on front cover. 5"x7" inches. 16pp. This is a sequel to the original Kreutzer Sonata, originally published in 1889. An absolutely pristine copy. The publication of The Kreutzer Sonata set off an explosive debate in Europe, America, and Asia on matters that were then called the "sexual question" and the "woman problem." These debates stirred widespread condemnation from all sides, as well as fervent admiration. The Kreutzer Sonata was censored or forbidden in some countries as "indecent literature." In this sequel, Tolstoy repeatedly makes reference to verses from the Gospels as evidence supporting his views.

The Gospel in Brief is a 1892 synthesis of the four gospels of the New Testament into one narrative of the life of Jesus by Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Included in a larger volume in 1892, the 1896 account published as The Gospel in Brief is notable in that it excludes many of the supernatural aspects of the original gospels, such as their claims of Jesus's divine origins and ability to perform miracles. Instead, the work focuses on Jesus's teachings to his followers, presumably those which Tolstoy found most compelling. The Gospel in Brief is thought by some to be deeply reflective of Tolstoy's own interpretation of Christianity. The Gospel in Brief is said to be the result of Tolstoy's close study of the original Koine Greek New Testament. The account presented in Tolstoy's gospel is also notable in its sharp contrast with the contemporaneous views of the Russian Orthodox Church. Tolstoy was a fierce critic of the Russian Orthodox Church, which went so far as to excommunicate him for his writings on Christianity in 1901.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. This is an uncommon, early paperback copy of "THE KREUTZER SONATA" by Count Lyof Tolstoi (Leo Tolstoy). 1890 early American edition; The Pollard Publishing Company; New York. Softcover with the original paper wraps intact. Complete and Unabridged. Translated from the original manuscript by Frederic Lyster. Included in this edition is a Preface by Tolstoy "giving his reasons why this book was written." From a review: "The Kreutzer Sonata is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889 and promptly censored by the Russian authorities. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character, Pozdnyshev, relates the events leading up to his killing his wife; in his analysis, the root cause for the deed were the 'animal excesses' and 'swinish connection' governing the relation between the sexes." Condition: There are bits of paper missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tears at the bottom and outer cover edges. The bottom-left back cover corner has chipped away. There are a few tiny, light stains on the front cover. Both covers are securely attached. Small tear at the bottom edge of the title page. Nice text pages - clean with only tanning to the last page (118) and the facing advertisement page. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
