He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909; the fact that he never won is a major controversy. Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, Tolstoy's notable works include the novels "War and Peace" (1869) and "Anna Karenina" (1878), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, "Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth" (1852-1856), and "Sevastopol Sketches" (1855), based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. His fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" (1886), "Family Happiness" (1859), "After the Ball" (1911), and "Hadji Murad" (1912). He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. "What to Do" - Thoughts Evoked by the Census of Moscow" was first published in Russian in 1887.' Tan stapled wrappers with black lettering on front cover. 5"x7" inches. 16pp. This is a sequel to the original Kreutzer Sonata, originally published in 1889. An absolutely pristine copy. The publication of The Kreutzer Sonata set off an explosive debate in Europe, America, and Asia on matters that were then called the "sexual question" and the "woman problem." These debates stirred widespread condemnation from all sides, as well as fervent admiration. The Kreutzer Sonata was censored or forbidden in some countries as "indecent literature." In this sequel, Tolstoy repeatedly makes reference to verses from the Gospels as evidence supporting his views.

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. This is an uncommon, early paperback copy of "THE KREUTZER SONATA" by Count Lyof Tolstoi (Leo Tolstoy). 1890 early American edition; The Pollard Publishing Company; New York. Softcover with the original paper wraps intact. Complete and Unabridged. Translated from the original manuscript by Frederic Lyster. Included in this edition is a Preface by Tolstoy "giving his reasons why this book was written." From a review: "The Kreutzer Sonata is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889 and promptly censored by the Russian authorities. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character, Pozdnyshev, relates the events leading up to his killing his wife; in his analysis, the root cause for the deed were the 'animal excesses' and 'swinish connection' governing the relation between the sexes." Condition: There are bits of paper missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tears at the bottom and outer cover edges. The bottom-left back cover corner has chipped away. There are a few tiny, light stains on the front cover. Both covers are securely attached. Small tear at the bottom edge of the title page. Nice text pages - clean with only tanning to the last page (118) and the facing advertisement page. Overall the book is in Good- condition.

In den Warenkorbviii, 773, [vii, including 4 pages of ads]. 7.75" x 5". Sheets bulk 35 mm. Anna Karenina is the well-known and well-loved work of Russian literature by Leo Tolstoy, who placed himself in the novel as the character of Levin. Tolstoy considered this to be his first novel, which he finished in anguish, even hiding objects he could use to kill himself for fear of what he might do. It was first translated into English in this edition by Nathan Haskell Dole, an author and translator who also worked as literary advisor to Thomas Y. Crowell publishers a year after this work was published through them. While evidence for issue points is lacking, all presumed first issue points here are present, including floral endpapers, 35mm bulk, rear ads, and publisher's address (13 Astor Place). Dark spots and foxing text block edges and mildly throughout, rough bottom edge 321-326 pps, moderate rubbing boards and edges with spots of wear to tips and corners, toned spine, overall very good or better copy, still tight and bright. Octavo, original cloth, with gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, patterned endpapers. Introduction and translated by Nathan Haskell Dole.ÂIn very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Vladimir Nabokov called Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina "one of the greatest love stories in world literature." Matthew Arnold claimed it was not so much a work of art as "a piece of life." Set in imperial Russia, Anna Karenina is a rich and complex meditation on passionate love and disastrous infidelity. First issued serially in 1873; first published in book form in Moscow in 1878. Upon first reading it, Dostoyevsky wrote: âAnna Karenina is sheer perfection as a work of art. No European work of fiction of our present day comes anywhere near it.â.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition in English of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth lettered in gilt, patterned endpapers. Translated from the Russian by Nathan Haskell Dole with a preface by him. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. A very sharp example. Leo Tolstoy is best known for War and Peace and Anna Karenina, commonly regarded as amongst the greatest novels ever written. He also, however, wrote many masterly short stories, and this volume contains four of the longest and best in distinguished translations that have stood the test of time. In the early story 'Family Happiness', Tolstoy explores courtship and marriage from the point of view of a young wife. In 'The Kreutzer Sonata' he gives us a terrifying study of marital breakdown, in 'The Devil' a powerful depiction of the power of sexual temptation, and, in perhaps the finest of all, 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich', he portrays the long agony of a man gradually coming to terms with his own mortality.
