He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909; the fact that he never won is a major controversy. Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, Tolstoy's notable works include the novels "War and Peace" (1869) and "Anna Karenina" (1878), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. The publication of The Kreutzer Sonata set off an explosive debate in Europe, America, and Asia on matters that were then called the "sexual question" and the "woman problem." These debates stirred widespread condemnation from all sides, as well as fervent admiration. The Kreutzer Sonata was censored or forbidden in some countries as "indecent literature." In this sequel, Tolstoy repeatedly makes reference to verses from the Gospels as evidence supporting his views.

Softcover with the original paper wraps intact. Complete and Unabridged. Translated from the original manuscript by Frederic Lyster. Included in this edition is a Preface by Tolstoy "giving his reasons why this book was written." From a review: "The Kreutzer Sonata is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889 and promptly censored by the Russian authorities. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character, Pozdnyshev, relates the events leading up to his killing his wife; in his analysis, the root cause for the deed were the 'animal excesses' and 'swinish connection' governing the relation between the sexes." Condition: There are bits of paper missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tears at the bottom and outer cover edges. The bottom-left back cover corner has chipped away. Anna Karenina is the well-known and well-loved work of Russian literature by Leo Tolstoy, who placed himself in the novel as the character of Levin. Tolstoy considered this to be his first novel, which he finished in anguish, even hiding objects he could use to kill himself for fear of what he might do. It was first translated into English in this edition by Nathan Haskell Dole, an author and translator who also worked as literary advisor to Thomas Y. Crowell publishers a year after this work was published through them. While evidence for issue points is lacking, all presumed first issue points here are present, including floral endpapers, 35mm bulk, rear ads, and publisher's address (13 Astor Place).
